Stewardship Ideas
Have you posted a suggestion about
stewardship? In July, PeaceHealth President and Chief Mission Officer Alan Yordy discussed the need to reduce costs. He asked caregivers to share their suggestions online so that all ideas for cost-saving can be considered.

So far, upwards of 150 suggestions have been posted. Our shared services communications team is coordinating the job of getting a response for each suggestion. If yours has not yet received an answer, know that we will get there. We'll even send you an email to let you know when we post a response.
PeaceHealth Physicians & Providers,
Dr. Howard Graman

PHMG has not been immune to the recent Stewardship changes that have been announced throughout PeaceHealth this week. Our thoughts are with those who have been asked to change their role or involuntarily leave our organization. This has been a tough week for some of those we work with and care about. I ask that you make a special effort to reach out to your fellow caregivers during this difficult time.

In keeping with both our need for stewardship and our desire to maintain structural parallels with the larger organization, we are making some changes to our PHMG operational leadership.  Greg Orr will assume oversight of operations for the entire Columbia Network, Henry Veldman for Oregon West Network and Nena Harvey will direct clinics in both Florence and Cottage Grove. Cal Lantz will move to hospital leadership team in Longview. Please join me in thanking Cal for his exceptional service to the medical group. (Read the memo.)

Whether you're working this holiday or not, please send good thoughts to the providers and caregivers in the Northwest Network, Oregon Cardiology, Drs. Peter Rice and Maryanne Scott, Deb Taylor, Michele Budd, their teams and the Epic project staff for a smooth go-live Sunday and next week.

Support for Pain Management
New Algorithm, Toolkit Now Available
Optimal treatment of patients with chronic pain presents a number of challenges for physicians and other health care providers.  Issues range from the scientific basis for efficacy (safe and appropriate use), to health care providers' fears of legislative reprimand for indiscriminate prescribing and varying state regulations across our communities.

Among the most significant issues is the abuse and misuse of narcotics (opioids). Their use has increased substantially since 1990, along with a rising mortality rate from aberrant behaviors.

To help providers manage care for patients who need ongoing pain management support, PHMG has developed a clinical algorithm - Narcotic Management for Patients with Chronic Non-Malignant Pain and supporting provider toolbox.  In Epic, providers can access both via the dashboards for ambulatory support and clinical staff.

We are also developing a computer-based training module with CME similar to the one for diabetes

PHMG gratefully extends thanks for this work to: Matt Williams and Drs. Jill Chaplin, Jon Dykstra, Ralph Fillingame, Peter Rice and Ron Shearer.

Epic Update
Go-live No. 3 Begins This Weekend
Next week at this time, nearly 75 percent of PeaceHealth clinics will be up and running on Epic ambulatory.

Oregon Cardiology and clinics in the following Northwest Network communities go live on Epic this weekend and next week:
  • Alaska (Ketchikan, Prince of Wales)
  • Washington
    (Bellingham, Friday Harbor, Lynden, Sedro-Woolley)

Thanks to all of the leaders, providers and caregivers throughout the clinics and on the Epic team for their hard work in preparing for this launch. Read the August issue of Epic News for a glimpse of the areas going live.  Visit the Epic Communication site for photos from the communities.

Bonus:  Dr. Mike Geist plays a major role in leading the Epic ambulatory project. He is also a practicing internist in Bellingham; his clinic goes live on Epic next week. He shares a few thoughts on what it feels like to switch to a new EHR in this issue of the Epic News
