PeaceHealth Physicians & Providers,

Dr. Howard Graman
Since PeaceHealth started collecting ideas from caregivers on stewardship a few weeks ago, more than 140 have come in. Leaders throughout the organization are reviewing and starting to post responses to each suggestion. If you check the site, prepare to be impressed by how thoughtful and insightful our caregivers are.

Speaking of thoughtful... if you ever wonder if your work is worthwhile, consider this...one of the physicians in our group received a thank you this week from a patient he saw more than 12 years ago at another system in a different state.

Dr. Bob Pelz, an infectious disease specialist in Eugene, received a heartfelt note from a grateful young man who credits Dr. Pelz with saving his life in 2001. (Read the e-mail about that life-changing care.)

In today's stressful environment, it might be easy to sell ourselves short.

Let's not underestimate the good we do. Whether we receive thanks or not, one day, we will more than likely learn just what a difference we have been making.

PHMG Best Practice #2
Communication is Key to Patient Experience
Recently, Laura Sanger, PHMG's Patient Experience Program Manager, began asking for insight from providers who consistently receive top marks from their patients via the CG-CAHPS survey. She recently talked with
Matt Williams, PA-C
Matt Williams, a certified physician assistant from a family medicine clinic in Vancouver.

Good communication using a teach-back approach and after-visit-summaries were cited by Mr. Williams as a key part of what he uses to build trust and help patients.  (Read Laura's brief interview with Mr. Williams.)

Coincidentally, provider communication will appear as a measure on the VISTA dashboard starting FY14. Expect to hear more about this change from your local leaders by early September.

New Quality & Safety Site
Check Out the New Site
PHMG has published a Quality and Safety SharePoint site to keep providers and staff informed and up-to-date about the FY14 priorities and current work of the Quality and Safety Committee.

Here you will also find information about chronic pain management, the Measure Up, Pressure Down hypertension campaign, how to use your DRP recognition for ABFM and ABIM Maintenance of Certification credit and much, much more. We are also posting the latest decisions of the Quality and Safety Committee on the home page, so we hope you will visit often for these updates.

We welcome your suggestions on how to improve this new site and what information you would find useful. Use the "Contact Us" link at the top of the page and send us a message.
