This Week's Q&A

Question:
What's the Measure Up, Pressure Down campaign? I've heard PHMG is participating. What does that mean?

Answer:

Yes, PHMG formally agreed to participate in a three-year Measure Up, Pressure Down campaign by the American Medical Group Association.

We are among 135+ medical groups and systems aiming to have 80 percent of our hypertensive patients in control (<140/90) by 2016.

Everyone in the campaign adopts one (or more) evidence-
based care processes ("planks") known to improve care and outcomes.

PHMG has chosen Plank No. 2--Hypertension Guide Used and Adherence Monitored. As part of our participation, we are:
  • updating our 2012 hypertension clinical algorithm
  • piloting a protocol-driven RN hypertension clinic to reduce the burden on providers for ongoing hypertension medication management. This is similar to a model from Kaiser which has close to 95% control of blood pressure.

More on the hypertension clinic will be available as we move closer to implementation. In the meantime, here are some campaign resources:

   Head Start
High School for Health Care
PeaceHealth is partnering with an exciting new high school in Vancouver. Henrietta Lacks High School opens this fall, offering students a head start on jobs in health care. (Overview of HeLa High)

PeaceHealth Physicians & Providers,

Dr. Howard Graman
After over a  year of looking for the right individual to fill our open VP/medical directorship in Oregon, I'm pleased to announced that Dr. Doug Carr will start next month. He's an internist who has been at the Billings Clinic since 1989, first in patient care, then administration. His experience and expertise are a great fit for PeaceHealth. We look forward to working with him. (Read more about Dr. Carr.)

I also wanted to draw your attention to the featured video (left column) about a new high school opening this fall in Vancouver, Washington. Henrietta Lacks Health and Bioscience High School (HeLa High) is one of a handful of health-medical high schools in the nation. It's located next to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. Students will have the opportunity to learn hands-on medical work via internships at the hospital and local medical staff will also have the chance to guest lecture.

Thanks to leaders and other caregivers at PeaceHealth who have helped see this project come to fruition. It's a privilege for our organization to be part of encouraging the next generation to enter the health care field.
