PeaceHealth Physicians & Providers,
 | Dr. Howard Graman |
A couple of weeks ago, I shared a few highlights from the annual AMGA conference. As our leadership team begins action planning to address our findings in the PHMG provider engagement survey, there's one additional insight from that conference that comes to mind. It was contained in a presentation delivered by Daniel Pink and addressed the 3 main attributes that contribute to professional satisfaction. They were:
- Purpose - being part of a higher calling that's bigger than any one person
- Mastery - having the opportunity to become highly skilled at what you do
- Autonomy - having a sense of control over your environment and your work
To me, these ring true--especially the last one. The conference message was a powerful reminder of how important it is that you and your colleagues feel you have the opportunity and space to help determine how we will achieve our common goals as a group. The leadership team and I will be making a conscious effort to maximize this in the work ahead.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas.

PHMG Creates Narcotic Medication Agreement
|
Rather than build multiple versions of a contract in the new Epic system, PHMG has recently developed a system-wide Narcotic Pain Medicine Agreement that will replace all regional agreements. (Thanks to Peter Rice, Ralph Fillingame, Ron Shearer, Jim Harrison, Jon Dykstra, Jill Chaplin, Matthew Williams and Karen Sharpe for their work on this agreement.)
In the future, patients may sign the contract electronically. For now, patients will sign a paper copy of the agreement to be scanned into the medical record. The new contract is backed by two existing PHMG system tools:
- Policy to help providers and staff identify circumstances for recommending to terminate a patient-provider care relationship
- Dismissal workflow in Epic
The final piece of the pain-management package will be an algorithm to better support providers and staff in managing patients on narcotic medicines for non-cancer chronic pain. Watch for this to be posted in PHMG Weekly in a few weeks. Please direct any questions or comments to David Killaby or Dr. Karen Sharpe.
