This Week's Q&A
Question
I'm really worried about what patient information is going to be crossing over into the new EHR. What will be available in Epic after go-live?

Answer
Several strategies are under way to maintain access to information from old medical records:

1. Through interfaces & data conversion tools, we expect to move key bits of patient information from old EMRs into Epic so much of the data will be there on day 1. Which bits?
  • Lab results (2 years)
  • Other results (3 years)
  • Notes (3 years)
  • All scanned documents
  • All immunizations
  • All allergies
  • Select clinical observations

(see chart for full details )

2. Hospital systems will continue same as today until they're replaced by Epic (by 2017). We are working on links within Epic & these systems that would let users move easily back & forth.

3. Paper documents will continue to be scanned & links to them will be available in Epic, CE & McKesson.

4. Other systems will likely be available in a "read-only" mode after go-live until data can be extracted & archived.
