"The role of a teacher is not to teach. The role of a teacher is to find ways of ensuring that students learn how to learn and how to think." Olubayi Olubayi, Executive Director, Kiwimbi International.
Books by African Writers!
Missing from the Kiwimbi Library were books by African writers. Nearly all of the 20,000 books, many of which are academic, are written by Americans.
Thanks to a generous sponsor in the U.S., Kiwimbi purchased 128 books written by African authors. All books, 90% English and 10% Swahili, were immediately borrowed. The students now have books written by African authors that reflect their own lives and will give them an appreciation for African literature.
English or Swahili?
Both English and Swahili are mandatory in Kenyan schools. Students speak Swahili well, but are required to master academic Swahili.
National exams are in English.
