November 2014

Welcome to FORCE's November Update.  Thanksgiving is just around the corner and while we are grateful for so many things this holiday season, we are most grateful to each of you who is travelling your HBOC journey with us.

We hope you will share the information and resources below with other people facing hereditary cancer.

FORCE Video Series - One Minute Can Save a Life

Welcome to our "One Minute Can Save a Life" video series where we will be sharing monthly our short FORCE videos that we hope will educate and inspire you. Please share with your friends, family and anyone who might be helped by viewing these life-saving messages.

This month we celebrate life's blessings.  Watch as Karen Kramer, FORCE Vice President of Marketing, recounts her unique story and reminds us that men can pass along BRCA mutations too!

Testing Positive - and Thankful
Hereditary Cancer Research
Better treatment and prevention for HBOC cancers requires research. Research requires people! This is the basis of our Goal to Enroll Campaign. Below are cancer clinical trials enrolling HBOC patients. If you don't qualify for one of the studies below, visit our research search tool to find other HBOC prevention, detection, quality of life and treatment studies.

Ovarian Cancer Treatment Studies

  • SOLO2 is a Phase III, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, multicenter study of olaparib maintenance monotherapy in platinum sensitive relapsed BRCA mutated ovarian cancer patients in complete or partial response after platinum based chemotherapy.
  • ARIEL3 is a Phase 3 trial studying rucaparib as switch maintenance following platinum-based chemotherapy in patients with platinum-sensitive, high-grade serous or endometrioid ovarian, fallopian tube, or PPC cancer.  A BRCA mutation is not required for entry into this study.
  • NOVA is a maintenance trial for women with ovarian cancer to find out if niraparib (a PARP inhibitor) can help delay worsening in patients who had a good response to previous treatment with a platinum-type chemotherapy.

Breast Cancer Treatment Studies

  • OlympiAD is a phase III study comparing how olaparib (a PARP inhibitor) works compared to standard chemotherapy in  patients with HER2 negative metastatic breast cancer who have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.  Patients will be randomized 2 to 1, so patients will be twice as likely to receive olaparib than standard chemotherapy. Patients who may be eligible for the study but do not know their BRCA mutation status will be tested at no expense.

  • BROCADE is a phase II clinical trial for people with advanced hereditary breast cancer.

  • BRAVO is a trial for men and women who have HER2 negative, BRCA mutation positive breast cancer that progressed after prior treatment. BRAVO will compare niraparib (a PARP inhibitor) with standard chemotherapy.

Pancreatic Cancer Treatment Studies

  • RUCAPANC is a Phase 2 study of the oral PARP inhibitor rucaparib in BRCA-mutant locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Dave and His Family Say "Thank You, FORCE"

When Dave's sister discovered she had a BRCA mutation, he immediately got tested. He learned he's BRCA1 positive. His daughter Dana is, too.  Dave shared his information with his extended family. As a result, his cousin underwent genetic counseling and testing. Prophylactic surgery to remove her ovaries revealed previously undetected Stage 2 ovarian cancer. Dave's information saved her life.

Dave says, "Although the focus needs to be on women, men with a BRCA mutation are at greater risk of cancer than the general population. It's important they know how being BRCA positive can affect their lives, their children's lives, and their entire families. FORCE was invaluable to both my daughter and me through our journey. Thank you, FORCE!

10,000 individuals and families like Dave's need our help next year.

Volunteer Spotlight - Thank You Rhonda Scanlon

Rhonda discovered her interest in genetics in a junior high school science class. Thankfully for the hereditary breast and ovarian cancer community, she decided on a career in genetic counseling.  Rhonda shares her knowledge with those in our community via the FORCE Helpline. She provides information and resources that make the journey just a little easier.  But, Rhonda feels as if the answered questions she provides are dwarfed in comparison to the wisdom and inspiration she has received from working with FORCE families. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and joining the fight against hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, in whatever way works for you, please fill out our volunteer survey.
