The Florida State University Coastal & Marine Lab Summer Courses
Biology of FISHES: From Evolution to Conservation
Course Description

This course provides an overview of the most diverse group of vertebrates on earth, the fishes. We will begin by investigating the evolution of fishes and the relationships, biodiversity and zoogeography of the living fishes. We will then examine aspects of form, function, physiology, and behavior, emphasizing adaptations to life in aquatic and marine habitats at different life stages. We will end by discussing fisheries, conservation, and management of fish populations.

The very strong field component of the course introduces students to the variety of estuarine, marine, and freshwater habitats in NW Florida in close proximity to the  Florida State University Coastal & Marine Laboratory. Students will gain hands-on experience with a variety of scientific collection methods used to capture specimens ranging from small stream fishes to large sharks.
