Greek Audacity:The Island of the Blind
Greece has eleven million people and almost a half a trillion dollars in debt. It is virtually impossible to repay their global fiscal debts under those conditions.
However, the issue is deeper than that. Greece has a culture of not paying their bills. This country collects only about 3% of their taxes, costing up to 20 billion euros a year, according to one estimate. They've been delinquent more times than not and what's worse, the attitude is that of entitlement. What could you expect from a society where 20% of the voters' lists are dead, some for a long time?
An example is Zakynthos, a Greek island with 35,000 inhabitants. This paradise, called the Flower of the East, is now commonly referred to as the 'Island of the Blind'. Reason being: as many as 700 people are listed as being blind. Fact is, they falsely claim that handicap to collect 350 Euros a month in compensation. This long time scheme was perpetrated by leading local politicians and an ophthalmologist. Can't get an eye doctor to sign off? No problem; some of the 'blind' had their med documents signed by a urologist. Eventually the scam was shut down in 2011 when one of the 'blind' was caught driving his Porsche. The monthly stipend cost the Greek government several million euros a year.
It's anybody's guess as to how many fraudulent 'Islands of the Blind' are operated in Greece. Some folks might wonder why the European Community would even discuss a bailout. My question is: how can I get citizenship?
