Private Duty is the Talk of the Town at NAHC

I've just returned from Orlando, Florida and the 2012 National Association for Home Care and Hospice annual meeting and exposition.  Thousands of leaders from home health care, hospice, and private duty home care gathered to get the latest information on health care reform, government regulations, trends in clinical care, and new marketing ideas.

While there was a track that was focused on private duty home care, and a reception for members of the Private Duty Home Care Association (a NAHC affiliate), we also heard a lot of conversation about private duty in the leadership track.  Speakers on leadership in home health and hospice frequently mentioned private duty.

That's Good News and Bad News ...

Unleash the Power of Vision in Your Agency
One of the highlights of the National Association for Home Care & Hospice annual convention in Orlando this week was hearing John DeHart, the co-Founder and CEO of Nurse Next Door, in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Nurse Next Door is the largest private duty franchise in Canada, with over 60 offices, and has just begun offering franchises in the US.  I had the privilege of speaking for Nurse Next Door at their annual franchise partners conference last week in Vancouver.

John presented a powerful program on how to Unleash the Power of Vision in Your Agency.  It is based on his personal experience in creating a clear vision for the company, and building on their core values.

What Demographics in China Can Teach Us About Home Care in the USA
As you know, tracking the forces and trends shaping the future of home care in America is one of our core competencies here are Leading Home Care and Private Duty Today.  My friend and professional speaking colleague, Dan Burrus, is an internationally known business and technology futurist.  His email newsletter, Daniel Burrus' Strategic Insights often contains ideas and insights that are helpful to understanding the future of home care in America. Here's an example:

"Demographics provide an excellent source of hard trends that can give us a powerful window into the future of any nation. Currently, China has 8.5 million elderly and 180 million people over age 60. That's a lot of people getting older every year, but that's today. If we jump ahead 20 years, they will have over 360-million people over age 60. That's a huge number, especially when you consider that China has not built a strong social safety net to provide pensions, affordable healthcare, or homes for the elderly. ...
