GlobalShop 2013

The Retailworks team headed south last week; not as far south as most of us would have liked, given the spring weather, or lack thereof, but excitement reigned nonetheless as our designers attended the GlobalShop 2013 show at McCormick Place in downtown Chicago.

For the uninitiated, GlobalShop is the world's largest annual event for retail design and shopper marketing. The event offers valuable networking opportunities, conference program sessions, creative and innovative ideas, store fixture companies, architectural companies, signage, lighting, packaging, flooring, new technologies...well you get the idea!

We made some new friends, and visited some old, and our cameras got a workout as we soaked in the visual feast for our eyes and ears. Some highlights:

Do Your Window Signs Present You In the Best Light?

Window signs are such a simple item to get right, yet in the hectic frenzy of a retailer's day they can easily be overlooked. Since signs on your storefront are part of the overall first impression of your business, this is an easy place where a simple solution makes a big impact.

What should you keep in mind?

 Bad sign

Don't:

Use scotch tape to attach to a surface.

Don't display a ripped or wrinkled sign.

Don't cross out words on your sign.

Don't make your sign too wordy.

Do not block views into your window

Good sign

Do:

Put signs in an acrylic
sign holder.
Hang your sign straight.
Include your logo (unless it is a community-provided sign).

Make it clear and easy to read.

Include some color to draw attention.

There are some nice acrylic sign holders available

at local retailers that can help you accomplish this objective for very little money. They range in

price, with a simple version starting at less than $10.

Client Event:

 Neroli Celebrates 20 years

Our congratulations to Neroli Salon & Spa in Milwaukee who recently celebrated their 20th anniversary by participating in an Earth Day cut-a-thon on April 22. They joined Aveda stylists worldwide who aimed to set a world record of raising the most money for charity with hair cuts performed in a 24 hour period. Locally, Neroli raised money for the local charity  Alliance for the Great Lakes.

Retailworks worked with Neroli when they first decided to expand to the west burbs in the 90's. More recently, Lyn Falk spoke on visual branding at their all-employee kick-off 20th Anniversary event back in October.

Design Tip

Vary your light levels. No one likes to spend time in a space that is flat and monotone. It is unnatural. We have spent the majority of our human existence in light that varies throughout the day: think dawn, mid-day, and dusk light levels. We respond positively to light that is ever changing. Light levels affect

Did You Know?

We make 80% of our purchase decisions with our subconscious mind.
This is why we as designers, spend so much time studying how and why we react the way we do, instinctively, to the elements and principles of design. Our left brain, aka our ego, THINKS it's in control all the time, but when in a purchasing situation,

  Aviation Heritage Center

Retailworks has been assisting the Aviation Heritage Center of Wisconsin in Sheboygan Falls in its quest to become a premier aviation attraction. Although the Center is currently pretty whiz-bang, the plan is to expand and improve-even going so far as to add a second floor [within the volume of the current space].

The improved space will become more dynamic and exciting, offering a kaleidoscope of

Main Street Follow Up

"I thought I was going to hate you," said one of the retailers that had Lyn Falk come to audit her retail space. She said her business partner insisted she show up for the "hour of advice" and she was hardly excited about being there.

But she quickly warmed up to Lyn when she realized she wasn't an ordinary "consultant". By the time Lyn left, she had a list of doable things to take care of in her shop. She even called the Main Street director the next day to say she had
