CROCE'S BULLETIN
News for Your Car and Safety
July 2013
Greetings!

Summertime is a time to travel. Even with gasoline prices at an all-time high, Americans are taking to the road for stay-cations, weekend get-a-ways and some are even college bound. Taking time in the summer months for proper auto maintenance will help protect against any unexpected breakdowns, especially if your vehicle is not brand new.
Help Your Car Keep Its Cool During The Summer

It's always important to keep your ride in great shape, especially during the hot, long summer season. The extreme temperatures, combined with the heat generated by those long driving stretches, can take its toll on any vehicle. With some essential basic car
maintenance, you can keep your car on the road for many summers to come. Carefully inspect hoses and belts for cracks, fraying and other signs of wear and tear. Excess heat causes the rubber compound to deteriorate quickly as it ages. If you see these signs of wear, have these parts replaced immediately.

Always check the coolant levels and the radiator. A leaky radiator can spell disaster on the open road. In addition to checking the fluid levels, check underneath the radiator for any cracks or other signs of damage or leaks. Keep your tires properly inflated. The friction caused by an underinflated tire creates excess heat, which in turn makes your tire more vulnerable to a blowout at high speeds. Underinflated tires also cause your car to use more fuel. Always check your tires' air pressure and inflate them accordingly. Don't hesitate to replace those dirty filters too. Your fuel economy will thank you and so will your engine and cooling system.

Car Care and the College Student

A recent study by the Independent Insurance Agents of America shows that over 70 percent of college students keep a car on campus. With having the freedom to go anywhere they please comes the responsibility of the upkeep and maintenance.

Before students set off for college, parents should take the time to teach them some handy basic car maintenance skills. Checking the oil, tire pressure and tire wear, along with other crucial skills, can help college students spot potential issues before they turn into a serious and expensive problem. It's also a good idea for students to know where the nearest auto repair shop is located, especially for car problems that require professional servicing beyond basic car maintenance.

Car Insurance for College Students

Making a break from the parents doesn't mean making a break from their auto insurance policy. By staying on their parents' policy, college students can save hundreds of dollars annually on insurance premiums. For some students, it's cheaper to get their own auto insurance policy. Depending on the college students' driving situation and type of car insurance will depend on what type of car insurance you may need.  Whether your student drives your car or someone else's, contact your car insurance company for a quick policy update. It's all a matter of weighing the options and choosing what's best.
