Dear (Contact First Name),
Talk to Your Teens About Taking the Pledge
To Never Text and Drive
Texting Can Always Wait
Most people know that texting should never, ever be attempted while driving. People who are texting while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident than those who are not. The reason is simple: texting takes your eyes and attention off of the road. But many people, especially teens, seem to think they can get away with texting and driving; that they can manage it safely. Unfortunately the statistics tell a different story: 100,000 accidents a year involve texting while driving.
It's important to get the message to teens that no text is worth the risk, because in an AT&T wireless survey, 75 percent of teens say that texting while driving is common among their friends. Unfortunately, it only takes a moment to change their lives-or the lives of someone else-forever. If you have a teen, or are close to one, ask them this: Will the text you're sending or responding to while driving matter 5 years from now? No. But it could rob them of the rest of their lives-or the lives of someone else.
Teens often times don't want to listen to their parents' advice, so here's some great videos by teens. The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles sponsors a contest every year that encourages high school teens to create videos on safe driving.

Governor Malloy of Connecticut and other state judges chose the Top 10 best student-made videos submitted for the 2013 DMV teen-safe driving video contest. The public-service video competition drew more than 128 entries that involved nearly 480 students statewide. The students competed using a student-designed theme "Teen Safe Driving: Are You In?" which opened a wide range of creativity in the high school contest submissions.
The impact of these 25-second video public service commercials are designed for promoting safety messages on television, websites, and through various forms of social media. The contest aims to educate teens and parents about safe driving practices. Some local schools ranking in the Top 10 are:
- Arts at the Capitol Theater, Willimantic
- Daniel Hand High School, Madison (2)
- Hall High School, West Hartford (3 ranking videos)
- New Canaan High School
- Simsbury High School
- Weston High School
- Waterbury Arts Magnet High School
The videos provide a fun and creative way to get the important message to teen and adult drivers and safe driving.
As adults, we also need to be sure we act as role models who never text and drive. Never. If the need to text is urgent, pull over safely and text. Pull back onto the road only when you're absolutely through with texting, and you've informed the person you're texting with that you cannot text again until you are safely to your destination.
