NEW I-459 & I-20/59 INTERCHANGE
If you will be traveling to Tuscaloosa using I-459 S to I-20/59 W, you may notice an improvement made by the Alabama Department of Transportation to the interchange that connects these highways. In the past, the on-ramp from I-459 S onto I-20/59 W has gone from two lanes to one lane. Through the support of ALDOT, this interchange has been updated to include two lanes throughout the merge onto I-20/59 W. Now, there is no need to merge into the left lanes immediately as the left lane becomes one of the main I-20/59 W lanes and the far right lane extends all the way down to exit 104. ALDOT's improvement to this interchange will be most helpful for morning and afternoon game traffic that had previously backed up on I-459 up to five miles.
NEW ON-CAMPUS ROADBLOCK
Beginning this season three hours prior to kickoff, there will be a roadblock inside of the core campus on University Blvd. at Hackberry Ln. westbound. With approximately 40,000 people on the Quad each Gameday, we have taken this action to improve pedestrian safety. The only passes that will be allowed to drive through this roadblock are NW Stadium, NE Stadium Rose Administration, Elm Dr and Lots 1& 2 for people with disabilities. All other passes will be directed northbound or southbound. Please plan your route to your parking lot by avoiding University Blvd. when road blocks are up.
POST-GAME TRAFFIC CHANGE
Any traffic heading southbound on 5th Ave will no longer be able to cross University Blvd. toward Bryant Dr. All traffic will turn left onto University Blvd. Vice versa, no Bryant Dr. traffic will be able to turn left onto 5th Ave (Hilliard Dr.) toward University Blvd. before law enforcement deems it safe to return to normal traffic operations.
PRE-GAME TRAFFIC TIP
Traveling through Birmingham to Tuscaloosa on I-20/59?
To avoid potential backups on I-20/59 where the highway merges from three lanes into two lanes try exit 89 to Highway 11 for the Cottondale route or exit 100 to the Highway 216 route.
POST-GAME TRAFFIC TIP
If you take I-20/59 north to get home after the game, try taking University Blvd east through Alberta City & Cottondale. When you get to the intersection of University Blvd & Hwy. 216, take a left onto Hwy. 216 and follow it to the interstate. Law enforcement will be working this intersection to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible to the interstate.
