Vail Honored by Universidad Mesoamericana

Dr. Gabrielle Vail, visiting assistant professor of international and area studies, recently presented a keynote address at the 14th anniversary of Universidad Mesoamericana in Guatemala City. The address was in conjunction with the publication of her commentary, "Códice de Madrid," which she was asked to write by the university's rector.

The Madrid Codex, the subject of Vail's book and presentation, is a pre-hispanic manuscript, likely dating to the late 15th or early 16th century, composed by eight or nine separate Maya scribes.

Film Screening and Conversation: "Shored Up"

November 5 | 6:30 p.m.
Mildred Sainer Pavilion, 5313 Bay Shore Road

"Shored Up" is a new documentary film about sea level rise. Set in Long Beach Island, N.J. and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the film explores the political conflicts and personal stakes of communities along the shore. "Shored Up" talks to scientists, politicians, residents and a wide range of experts to expose major shortcomings in coastal management and the immediate need for change. Filmed over three years and culminating in the impact of Hurricane Sandy, it becomes an eerie foretelling of the storm's devastation and a witness to its dramatic aftermath. Following the film screening, there will be a question and answer session with director Ben Kalina and experts from New College and the community.

Tickets are free but an RSVP is required. Reserve tickets online at donate.ncf.edu/events or call 941-487-4888
