Sendova Awarded Top Prize at Conference 

 

A paper by Mariana Sendova, professor of physics at New College of Florida, was awarded first place at the Fourth International Conference "From Nanoparticles and Nanomaterials to Nanodevices and Nanosystems."

 

Sendova's paper, "BaTiO3 Nanoparticles: Temperature-Dependent Micro-Raman Spectroscopy," was chosen from a field of 71 presenters, from countries including Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Greece, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Serbia, Turkey, Romania, United Kingdom and the United States. The conference was held June 14-16 on the island of Corfu, Greece.

 

As the award winner, Sendova spoke before the assembly of some 200 scientists and told them of her research program with undergraduate students at New College, she said.

College Selects New Communications Director

 

New College of Florida has named Jessica Rood, an experienced and award-winning higher education professional, as its new director of communications and marketing.

 

Rood has been director of creative services at St. Lawrence University, in upstate New York, since 2011. In that position, she launched a comprehensive brand messaging project and visual identity project for the college. She designed publications for the college's alumni relations and admissions departments, donor relations, annual fund and other programs.

Summer Projects at Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute and the Mind Research Network

New College students Phil Pope, Seth Hearld, Wiley Corning and Alex Wells will discuss their summer internship research in genomics and methylation, virtual genomes and data mining, novel algorithms for processing brain images, and lung carcinogenesis and acquired chemo-resistance. The talk is intended for a general scientific audience and all are welcome to attend.

 

 

History, Social Change and the LGBTQ Community:

More Than Just Marriage

How well do you know the history of the struggle for gay rights and dignity beyond marriage debates? Come trace developments from the 1950s backlash though unexpected stories of early Christian support for gay rights, ending with a focus on where the struggle continues today in our own communities. 


The Gender Studies Program at New College is sponsoring the panel discussion, with featured speaker David Johnson, associate professor of history at University of South Florida, on "The Lavender Scare in 1950s Florida."  Respondents are Heather White, adjunct assistant professor and research scholar, New College, on "Christianity and the Rise of Gay Rights" and Ken Shelin, former Sarasota City Commissioner and Equality Florida Board Member, on "Where We Stand Today."


This event is free and open to the public.
