Washington Monthly Ranks New College in Top for Liberal Arts
| |
New College was ranked No. 8 among the nation's liberal arts colleges - and No. 1 among public liberal arts schools - in Washington Monthly magazine's "2013 College Rankings" issue.
The magazine touts its methodology as being different from that of U.S. News and World Report. "We rate schools based on what they are doing for the country - on whether they're improving social mobility, producing research, and promoting public service," its editors said in a website posting accompanying the rankings.

A selection of brief news, photos and video about New College students, staff and faculty
Professor Thomas Olshewsky, Research Scholar in Humanities at New College, presented two papers at the World Congress of Philosophy, meeting August 3-10 in Athens, Greece.
The World Congress meets every five years in one of the capitals of the world for an international exchange of research in the field. Prof. Olshewsky presented his first paper, "Eidos and Idea in Plato and Aristotle" to a session on "The concept of form and way of life" arranged by the International Association of Greek Philosophy. He argued that Plato and Aristotle offered different conceptions of Form that lead to divergent conceptions of norms for life.
His second paper, "Mythos/Ethos/Logos", was presented to a session on "The philosophy of culture" and attempted to expose the interrelations of the three for our ways of being in the world, and the problems we find in the disintegration of those relations.
