New College Appoints Zamsky as Dean of Studies
| |
New College of Florida has appointed Robert Zamsky, associate professor of English at the College, to the newly created position of Dean of Studies.
In the June 18 announcement, Provost Stephen Miles praised Zamsky as a "very effective leader on academic issues" and a talented advisor who is "committed strongly to student success."
The Dean of Studies position replaces the Associate Provost position. The new dean's responsibility is to create a seamless relationship between all offices serving students, including Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Enrollment Services.

Sara Roberts Foundation Supports Animal Betterment Project
| |
The Homeless Animal/Animal Betterment Project at New College of Florida has received an $8,150 grant from the Sara Roberts Foundation, a Sarasota-based animal welfare charity.
The funding will expand the project, in its second year, by supporting a work-study volunteer coordinator position and other activities. The Sara Roberts Foundation also supported the project last year.
Last year, New College students performed nearly 300 hours of volunteer work at local animal rescue agencies, including Humane Society of Sarasota County, Cat Depot and Save Our Seabirds. The coordinator will help line up students with volunteer opportunities, track and publicize activities and help develop new programs.

The Library will be open to the public during summer hours while the renovation takes place.
Alumna Stacy Greene Awarded ALA Spectrum Scholarship
New College alumna Stacy Greene will receive an American Library Association Spectrum Scholarship that will help her in her pursuit of a double masters from Simmons College in Library Science and Children's Literature. The Spectrum Scholarship Program is ALA's national diversity and recruitment effort designed to address the specific issue of under-representation of critically needed ethnic librarians within the profession while serving as a model for ways to bring attention to larger diversity issues in the future.

Passerine has a strong New College connection: Sociology Professor David Brain plays dobro and alumna Sarah Moone plays fiddle and sings. The band is finishing its new album, "Nest of Strings," then hitting the road in August for an 18-day tour, including stops in Nashville and in Cincinnati, Brain's hometown. They plan an album-release concert when they return, but if you don't want to wait that long, Passerine will perform at the Blue Rooster in Sarasota on July 6.
