Six New College Students Awarded Fulbright Grants
| |
Six students at New College of Florida have been awarded prestigious Fulbright grants for 2013 and will study and teach in Germany, Sweden, Taiwan and the Czech Republic.
This year's recipients are Claire Albiez (Sarasota, Fla.) , Seth Borden (Sarasota, Fla.), Elizabeth Burger (Monroe, N.J.), Rosalia Maier-Katkin (Tallahassee, Fla.), Amelia Nordin (Orange Park, Fla.) and Silvia Ulloa (Bradenton, Fla.).
New College now has 43 Fulbright recipients since 2007 and 75 in its history. The Chronicle of Higher Education ranks New College as one of the top producers of Fulbright scholars, and the College has more Fulbright recipients per student than almost any other college. Read More

Katherine Newton Presents Research on Capitol Hill

Producing notable research is hardly unusual for New College of Florida students. But few present it to a Congressional audience on Capitol Hill, as fourth-year psychology student Katherine Newton did last week.
Newton presented her work as part of the Council on Undergraduate Research's Posters on the Hill. Her thesis project, on dolphins' use of echolocation, was one of 60 chosen from a pool of more than 800 applications.

Shira Dentz, New College's writer-in-residence for spring 2013, will read selections from her recently released second book, "door of thin skins," a hybrid of poetry, prose and visual elements. Dentz is the author of the book of poems, "black seeds on a white dish," which has been reviewed in many venues including Rain Taxi and Boston Review and shortlisted for the PEN/Osterweil Award 2011 and two chapbooks.

Woven History: Weaving and Identity in the Maya World

A tour and special presentation will be offered on the exhibition "Woven History: Weaving and Identity" in the Maya World, which will be closing on May 5th. This exhibition includes contemporary Mayan textiles from areas around Guatemala and Mexico and provides information related to the history of weaving, the techniques involved, and the role of weaving in ritual and ceremony. Woven History is exhibited on the second floor of the Museum and is included with admission.
