Michael Long Awarded Truman Scholarship

New College of Florida student Michael Long is one of 62 students nationwide to receive a 2013 Truman Scholarship, a prestigious award given to college juniors with exceptional leadership potential and who are committed to a career in public service.

 

Long, a third-year student from Sarasota, is the first New College student to receive a Truman Scholarship, and the only Florida student to receive the scholarship this year. The 62 recipients were chosen from 629 applicants at 293 colleges.

Hernandez Among Top 20 Latin and Hispanic Professors

Sarah Hernandez, associate professor of sociology at New College of Florida, was named one of the Top 20 Latin and Hispanic College professors in Florida by the website Online Schools Florida.

 

The listing recognizes post-secondary educators who have received awards for excellence in the classroom, on campus or in the community. The website is a division of StateStats.org, which develops online tools for education. "While dozens of Latin and Hispanic professors call Florida home, these 20 made a more-than-noticeable difference in 2012," its report said.

Poet Andrea Gibson, winner of the 2008 Women of the World Poetry Slam, will be performing at New College on April 13, at 7 p.m. in Sudakoff Center. Her work covers topics such as war, class, gender, bullying, white privilege, sexuality, love and spirituality. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. New College student poets will open for Gibson. Sponsored by the New College Student Alliance, the New College Gender Studies Program, the Gender and Diversity Center and Student Affairs.

A person walks through the Jane Bancroft Cook Library doors about every 86 seconds we're open. They've asked over 3,700 questions, gotten assistance with writing, math, foreign languages, study abroad and educational technology over 1,200 times. Library staff completed over 40,000 circulation transactions and added 2,850 items to the catalog. Come see how the library can help you at the National Library Week Celebration in Koski Plaza, Tuesday, April 14th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (If it rains, the event will take place on the first floor of Cook Library.)

Skillshare, art and action meet pro-health, anti-capitalist and anti-consumerist notions in student Kyra Berman-Gestring's Menstrual Nation. As an artistic happening with practical purpose, this event will equip all participants with the knowledge of basic sewing skills and information about the impact and importance of reusable menstrual products on both the environment and the user's health. Through this workshop, participants will learn to construct reusable menstrual pads and will be able to personalize their creations with materials provided free of charge. The event will be held April 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Sudakoff Conference Center. Food and beverages will be served. Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate. Space is limited to 40. Please RSVP to Kyra at kyra.berman-gestring@ncf.edu by April 10 to reserve your spot. Walk-ins are welcome, space providing. This event is in partial fulfillment of a senior thesis in Art and Gender Studies.
