Students Receive National Award for Volunteer Service

volunteers A New College of Florida student group received the President's Volunteer Service Award, national recognition of their ongoing service to Manatee County Habitat For Humanity.

About 15 students regularly participate in the "neighborhood build" at Hope Landing in Palmetto, as well as ReHabitat renovation projects and A Brush With Kindness painting projects throughout Manatee County. The students have logged more than 500 hours of work so far this year, qualifying them for the award's Silver level.

Manatee County Habitat nominated the students for the award, which is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is administered by the Points of Light Institute. Manatee County Habitat presented the award in a March 22 ceremony at Emerson Point Preserve.

What didn't? And why? All spring 2013 graduates are encouraged to RSVP. The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Career Education.

Combinatorics of Ideals with Monomial and Binomial Generators

April 4, at 3:30 p.m.

Chae Auditorium, Heiser Natural Sciences Complex, 500 College Drive

Free and open to the public; no reservations necessary

Louisiana State University's Trevor McGuire, a New College alumnus, will present the Natural Sciences Seminar "The Combinatorics of Ideals with Monomial and Binomial Generators." For nearly 200 years, invariant theory has had some place in mathematics; sometimes it has been at the forefront, and other times it was nearly forgotten. Much research has been done in applying tools from commutative algebra and combinatorics to the theory of monomial and binomial ideals. In fact, in their 2005 book, "Combinatorial Commutative Algebra," Miller and Sturmfels put the new branch of math on firm footing and extensively outlined the combinatorial theory behind free resolutions of monomial ideals and binomial ideals. When one reads the separate theories, though, it is clear that they are distantly related, but the current literature does not outline the connection between the two. In this talk, we will give exactly the relation between the two, and we will discuss free resolutions of ideals that have monomial and binomial generators and show that the new theory reduces to the two known theories. We will begin with an overview of resolutions and primarily discuss concrete examples on our way to the statement of the overarching theorem. All ideals discussed will be contained in a polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero and will typically have three variables. Only a understanding of kernels of homomorphisms and basic definitions from algebra and graph theory will be assumed.

Gender Studies Brown Bag Series: Talk by Susan Bright

April 5, 12-1 p.m.

Academic Center, ACE Room 327

Open to New College faculty and staff only

Susan Bright Susan Bright, Visiting Fellow, New College of Oxford, Professor of Land Law and McGregor Fellow will give the talk "'Part Ownership': Where Does This Fit in Housing Discourse?" Why does home ownership matter to people? What are some of the ways in which the English government has developed new forms of low-cost home ownership? This talk will describe one particularly problematic model that is commonly known as 'part buy, part rent,' and will illustrate how a failure to understand how law works can create real injustices. We encourage you to bring your lunch; light refreshments will be provided by the President's Office.
