Panel Discussion Explores Jackie Robinson's Legacy

 

RobinsonBaseball legend Jackie Robinson is in the spotlight again, his uniform number, 42, displayed on the walls of spring training ballparks and on movie screens as the title of an upcoming film.

 

But Robinson was more than a six-time All-Star, MVP and Hall of Famer, and more than the player who broke baseball's color barrier. "Rediscovering Jackie Robinson: A Hero Across Generations," a March 7 presentation sponsored by New College of Florida and the Family Heritage House Museum, brings in national experts on Robinson to examine his life in a broader perspective.

As part of Proust Project Sarasota, celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Swann's Way, William C. Carter of University of Alabama at Birmingham will give the lecture "Proust: A Centenary Tribute." New College President Donal O'Shea will provide opening remarks. Proust Project Sarasota is sponsored by New College of Florida, Sarasota County, Alliance Française de Sarasota and Book Store One.

The panel discussion "Rediscovering Jackie Robinson: A Hero Across Generations" will be held at the Family Heritage House Museum on Thursday, March 7, at 6 p.m. Jackie Robinson was more than a Black baseball payer, he was an active participant in the civil rights movement. Speakers include Professor Stephen Butler of Earlham College, Professor Richard Zamoff, a sociologist at George Washington University (GWU), and Dr. Barry Zamoff, the former associate director of research and statistics at the District of Columbia's Office of Human Rights and former professor of sociology at Howard University. Refreshments will be served. Co-sponsored by Family Heritage House Museum and New College of Florida.

CIW Logo The event is being hosted by New College Students Working for Equal Rights through coordination with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) as they stop at New College on the eighth day of their 200-mile March for Rights, Respect and Fair Food. There will be a dinner for the CIW, its allies and New College students, as well as entertainment provided by the marchers. New College students have long supported the CIW and farmworkers rights. In 1972, New College student Nan Freeman was killed while campaigning for the rights of farmworkers. The students involved seek to continue Nan Freeman's legacy and carry over her work for decades to come.
