Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition Opens at Isermann Gallery

Painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking work from 20 New College art students will be on display in the fifth annual New College of Florida Juried Student Art Exhibition, opening Monday, Feb. 4, and running through March 29. Juror Michael Wyshock, professor of fine arts at Ringling College of Art and Design, will present awards and speak at the opening reception, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.
The show celebrates the scope and talent of work from New College students, including Kyra Berman-Gestring, Cassidy Bingham, Nicole Cardenas, Isabelle Duvall, Fabienne Elie, Lara Grauerholz-Fisher, Marissa Herman, Cayle Judge, Samantha Kreeger, Jessie Leasure, Emily Martin, Fusha Mitchell, Paige Rawitz, Diana V. Siegel, Madhuri Shukla, Jeanine Tatlock, Stephanie Tonneson, Nathan Wilson, Alex Wyllie and Rachael Zucker.

| Maya Weaving Exhibition on Display at South Florida Museum | |
Students working with Professor Gabrielle Vail over ISP learned to weave on a traditional backstrap loom with Maya weaver Concepción Poou Coy Tharin and created an exhibit on Maya weaving at the South Florida Museum. The exhibition, "Woven History: Weaving and Identity in the Maya World," will be on display at the museum through March.

Sarasota Oral History Project

Celebrate Sarasota's water history and heritage at the Sarasota Oral History Project viewing and reception. New College of Florida students will present six oral history interview excerpts from residents who grew up in the area. Gender Studies Symposium

New College of Florida will be hosting the first annual Gender Studies Symposium on February 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The symposium, sponsored by the New College Feminist Alliance and the Gender Studies Program, was designed for students and by students, with faculty support. The symposium aims to highlight the work being done within the Gender Studies program and to promote dialogue across disciplines. This symposium also seeks to provide students with the opportunity to present their work in a conference setting with assistance from faculty and staff. The symposium will incorporate presentations from four students: third-year Rosalind Kichler, fourth-year Emily Ryan, fourth-year Lauren Brown and third-year Catherine Wolf. These presentations will span numerous disciplines in order to address contemporary work done within the Gender Studies program as well as religion, media studies and the social sciences. Student organizers include fourth-years Brie McLemore (Anthropology/Gender Studies AOC), Kyra Berman-Gestring (Art/Gender Studies AOC), Deirdre Johnson (Art History/Gender Studies AOC) and Erin Jayes (Literature/Gender Studies AOC). The symposium also received much support from faculty and staff, including, but not limited to, Professor Miriam Wallace, Gender Studies Program Coordinator Alice Shipman and Professor Emily Fairchild.

The New College of Florida Art AOC proudly presents the 2013 New College of Florida Juried Student Art Exhibition. The annual exhibition, which opens to the public February 4 and is on view through March 29, features a wide selection of student artwork celebrating the scope and talent of students' most recent creative pursuits. A reception and awards ceremony for the artists is scheduled for Thursday, February 7, 6:30-8 p.m. Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. with a talk by this year's juror, Michael Wyshock, professor of art at Ringling College of Art and Design. The event is sponsored by a generous donation from Art & Frame of Sarasota.

The New College Student Alliance, University of South Florida Sarasota Manatee Student Government Association and the Counseling & Wellness Center present the 2013 Fun and Fitness Expo, February 6, from 1-5 p.m. The event kick-off will take place in Hamilton Center, from 11-1 p.m. The expo will take place in front of the Counseling & Wellness Center with free food, massage, live music, fitness demos, free HIV testing, eye-sight screening, acupuncture, aerial yoga, a rock wall and more. Come for your chance to win prizes including a tandem skydive, scuba certification and ten minutes in a flight simulator.

New College alumna Erica Gressman returns to New College to present her master's thesis performance from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, "Wall of Skin." This multimedia theatrical piece is emotional and stunning; and Gressman will talk about the concepts and execution after the performance. As a New College student, Gressman performed twice in NMNC Crossroads concerts as drummer, vocalist, and keyboardist (simultaneously) for the student band Tyger Beat.
Note to New College students: Gressman will share her post-New College experiences with current students at an informal lunch meeting called "Artistic Life Beyond New College." The talk will take place in Ham Center cafeteria, Feb. 8, at 12 p.m. Open to New College students only.
