Countdown to Inauguration Begins

Only 22 days remain until New College celebrates the inauguration of President Donal O'Shea, the College's fifth president, on February 15-16. All members of the New College community, as well as the general public, are invited to attend this historic occasion, which includes two days of festivities and special events. In addition to the ceremony itself, we hope you will join us for discussions by prominent alumni, faculty members and college leaders from across the country and for our wonderful inaugural ball, which promises to be the social event of the year. Fed Economist to Address "Too Big To Fail"

A Federal Reserve economist and advisor on national monetary policy will give his views on the ongoing economic recovery, the state of the U.S. banking system and the meaning of the concept of "Too Big To Fail" in a talk at New College of Florida. Harvey Rosenblum, executive vice president and director of research for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, advises the bank's president on economic policy, and is an associate economist for the Federal Open Market Committee. He also is a past president of the National Association for Business Economics, and teaches and writes on financial issues. He received his doctorate in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1972. Read More |
Skestos Reappointed to Board of Trustees

Longboat Key resident George A. Skestos was reappointed Jan. 17 to the New College of Florida Board of Trustees by the Florida Board of Governors for the State University System. His term runs through January 6, 2018. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate. Skestos was first appointed to the board in June 2012 to complete the term of the late J. Robert Peterson. Skestos is the founder of Homewood Corp., a residential building company based in Columbus, Ohio, and a U.S. Navy veteran. He served on the Ohio State University Board of Trustees for nine years, including one year as president. Skestos also served as chairman of the University East Hospital Board. Read More |

Organizational expert David Allen will lead a dynamic, interactive seminar to help organizations cut through daily clutter and make strategic decisions. Allen, an alumnus of New College, was named one of the top five executive coaches in the U.S. by Forbes Magazine and has been featured on MSNBC, ABC News, CNN and in The New York Times and Washington Post. The seminar is presented by the Zonta Club of Sarasota in partnership with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and the Peggy Bates Foundation. To register, email [email protected]. Registration and continental breakfast begins at 8 a.m., and the seminar starts at 9 a.m.

Sarasota Oral History Project

Celebrate Sarasota's water history and heritage at the Sarasota Oral History Project viewing and reception. New College of Florida students will present six oral history interview excerpts from residents who grew up in the area. Gender Studies Symposium

New College of Florida will be hosting the first annual Gender Studies Symposium on February 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The symposium, sponsored by the New College Feminist Alliance and the Gender Studies Program, was designed for students and by students, with faculty support. The symposium aims to highlight the work being done within the Gender Studies program and to promote dialogue across disciplines. This symposium also seeks to provide students with the opportunity to present their work in a conference setting with assistance from faculty and staff. The symposium will incorporate presentations from four students: third-year Rosalind Kichler, fourth-year Emily Ryan, fourth-year Lauren Brown and third-year Catherine Wolf. These presentations will span numerous disciplines in order to address contemporary work done within the Gender Studies program as well as religion, media studies and the social sciences. Student organizers include fourth-years Brie McLemore (Anthropology/Gender Studies AOC), Kyra Berman-Gestring (Art/Gender Studies AOC), Deirdre Johnson (Art History/Gender Studies AOC) and Erin Jayes (Literature/Gender Studies AOC). The symposium also received much support from faculty and staff, including, but not limited to, Professor Miriam Wallace, Gender Studies Program Coordinator Alice Shipman and Professor Emily Fairchild.
