National Search Begins for New College VP for Advancement

A national search is underway for New College of Florida's vice president for advancement. The same individual will also be the executive director of the New College Foundation.

A small search committee chaired by Felice Schulaner, New College trustee and chair of the New College Foundation Board of Directors, considered proposals from six search firms that responded to New College's request for proposals to guide this national search. The search committee also includes Bill Johnston, chair of the New College of Florida Board of Trustees, and John Martin, New College's vice president for finance and administration, with New College President Dr. Donal O'Shea as an ex officio member.

A Day at the Lab

Fruitville Elementary students in fourth and fifth grades became "junior archaeologists" last weekend and learned about the history and cultures of early Florida. They spent a day with their family members in and around the New College of Florida Public Archaeology Lab. The event was hosted by anthropology professor Uzi Baram and his students.

Day at the LabThe youngsters learned about the ecology and history of Florida from earliest times to the near present, with a focus on the 19th century peoples of the region, including Anglo-American pioneers, Seminole Indians, maroon slaves and Cuban fishermen. New College students showed the elementary school students points of interest outside and inside the lab, demonstrating the tools of subsistence for living on Sarasota Bay, explained the archaeology and history of the Sarasota watershed and used activities to teach about local architecture and Sarasota's connection to the larger world.

A Day at the Lab was sponsored by New College of Florida and EdExploreSRQ.com, which provides students with access to educational opportunities offered by local arts, science and history organizations.
