About the Speaker: 

 

Amanda Mitchell will be providing information on the Sci-Tech Discovery Center and performing some favorite science demos. Responding to community demand for a cultural and educational destination, Sci-Tech Discovery Center, Inc. ("Sci-Tech") was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2004 as a multi-year initiative of the Junior League of Collin County, formerly known as the Junior League of Plano. Since then Sci-Tech has found a permanent home in Collin County at the Frisco Discovery Center and offers hands-on exhibits to the next generation of engineers, scientists, educators, and innovators. Sci-Tech provides dynamic education experiences to embrace discovery and innovation through the active exploration of science, math and technology.  

 

 

Cost for the Lunch: 

 

The cost for this lunch is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.  For reservations made after 12 noon on the preceding Monday (January 7th), the cost for lunch will be $30.  Please make any cancellations at least 24 hours prior to the meeting.  If you RSVP and you do not cancel on time, you will be charged for the meal, because TSPE has to pay for all the meals we RSVP for.

Public Agency Officials:

 

Please joins us for our Monthly Chapter Meetings!  The TSPE Dallas Board approved a special discounted meeting rate of $20 per attendee employed by a public agency organization.

January 2013 - President's Message

 

Happy New Year!  It is amazing that it is already the start of 2013.  I hope that you each had a wonderful holiday season.  But now it's time to get back into gear - the theme of this time of year is always the same... Resolutions, Change, Goal Setting, and Strategic Planning... I recently read a great book with thoughts on why many of us do not achieve our goals although we start with the best intentions.  "Strategy and the Fat Smoker" by David Maister made this phenomena more clear for me.  As Maister says, "We know what we should be doing, we know why, and often, we know how.  But what's really hard is overcoming short-term temptations to actually do what we already know is good for us." 

 

With this in mind, your TSPE Dallas Board is refocusing on our 2012-2013 Strategic Goals including our Career Development Seminar Series, improved Communications and Meeting Logistics, and highly successful upcoming events including... MATHCOUNTS on February 9th, the 2013 E-Week Event on February 21st, and the TSPE State Conference in Dallas in June 2013. 

 

Please let me know if you ever have ideas or feedback for our chapter to continue to increase the value of your TSPE membership. 

 

I wish you luck with whatever your 2013 goals might include.  Hopefully you'll start the year off with your TSPE Dallas family at our January 10th luncheon.

TSPE Dallas Chapter President 2012 - 2013

  

The Region V chapters of TSPE are joining together to host the Inaugural North Texas MATHCOUNTS Scrimmage. The competition will be held January 12, 2013 at the University of Texas at Arlington and will feature schools from all over the region. We are looking for volunteers the day of the competition to help grade and proctor the tests.

9:00-9:50 am Sprint Round (no spectators)

9:50-10:15 am Break

10:15-10:55 am Target Round (no spectators)

11:00-11:30 am Team Round (no spectators)

11:30 am - 1:00 pm Lunch

1:15-2:00 pm Countdown Round (Spectators Welcome)

2:00-3:00 pm Trophies, Awards, Prizes (Spectators Welcome)

 

*SET-UP (7:00am-9:00am) - Setup signs, tables, chairs, and testing rooms

*GREETER (7:30am-8:45am) - Hand out goodie bags and t-shirts, check calculators

*REGISTRATION (7:30am-8:45am) - Check-in schools, tally number of students, and verify name spelling

*PROCTOR (8:15am-noon) - Watches students, administers exam, checks calculators

*GRADER (9:30am-1:00pm) - Answers are provided, duties  are to grade examsand trade with partner to grade the same exam twice

*RUNNER (arrive by 9:30am) - Assisting in running tests, materials and other coordination help from each room

*LUNCH CREW (11:15am-1:00pm)

*CLEAN UP (2:00pm-3:30pm) - Pack up material and cleanup

 

Coffee, donuts, and pizza lunch will be provided on day of event.
