Sequestration 2 Percent Medicare Cut Takes Effect April 1st

A mandatory 2 percent cut in Medicare physician payments went into effect on Monday, April 1st as a result of across-the-board government sequestration cuts required by the Budget Control Act passed in August 2011. Originally slated to take effect on January 1, 2013, the cuts were initially postponed by Congressional action on the fiscal cliff.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will implement the 2 percent cut, reimbursing Medicare claims at 98 percent of their value with a service date on or after April 1. CMS estimates that sequestration will result in $11 billion in lost revenue to Medicare doctors, hospitals, and other providers. Other providers such as hospitals, medical equipment suppliers, home health services and others providing services to Medicare patients will also be subject to the 2 percent payment reduction.

AAOS Holds First Meeting of Orthopaedic Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee Members

On Friday, March 22, during the 2013 AAOS Annual Meeting, Dr. Fred Redfern hosted a meeting of orthopaedic surgeons who serve as Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee (CAC) members.  CAC members provide input on clinical coverage policies to Medicare Administrative Contractors (MAC), which are the entities that administer Medicare claims and conduct Medicare audits of physicians and facilities.  Each state is entitled to appoint CAC members for every major medical specialty and as such, orthopaedic surgeons can play a vital role in how each of the 14 MAC...

Vermont Blazes the Trail for Insurance Exchanges

The State of Vermont is the first in the nation to officially release premium details on the implementation of their insurance exchange as mandated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The program details released by Vermont set the stage for other states to announce their exchange offerings over the coming months.

The ACA establishes the framework and essential benefits for all insurance coverage available through the various exchanges.  All plans offered will have to incorporate the essential benefits required under the law but will be tiered to enable consumers to select their anticipated out of pocket expenses.   A bronze tier plan will cover 60% of the member's costs.   A Silver tier plan will cover 70%.   A Gold plan will cover 80%. And the Platinum will cover 90% of the anticipated average member's out of pocket expenses.

Vermont is the first state to post what those anticipated premiums will be when the program is implemented later this year.  Vermont released pricing for both Single and Family Coverage from two different insurers.   For a single coverage the Bronze plan will start at $369.90 per month.  The Silver plan will start at $440.26 per month.  The Gold will be $524.23 per month.  And finally the Platinum coverage will start at $604.17.
