Greetings!
In lieu of my regular newsletter, I thought I'd start by updating you on my
 | | my current studio (soon to be moved!) |
new contact information. My family is excited to be moving from our co-op in Jackson Heights, Queens to our new (well, actually 1918-built) home in Maplewood, NJ (an equally short hop from mid-town Manhattan via train). It will give the four of us more room to breathe and run (and me more room to continue making music, especially out of my soon-to-be-transplanted home studio!)
Our new address (effective Tues. Oct. 15th, 2013) is:
D.D. Jackson (and Elizabeth, Jarrett & Aria Jackson)
499 Ridgewood Road
Maplewood, NJ 07040
My cell: 646-250-3132
email: dd@ddjackson.com
Please update your records - with thanks!
I also wanted to make two quick mentions of some recent-goings on, especially with our summer pre-occupied in part by the big "house hunt":
Peg + Cat, the PBS Kids t.v. show for which I am one of the composers (created by Jennifer Oxley & Billy Aronson; music directed by J. Walter Hawkes), is finally making its debut all this week, with the first episode for which I wrote music airing this Monday, Oct. 14th at 9:30 am in the NYC area ("The Tree Problem/Another Tree Problem") and at various times elsewhere - check your local PBS listings!

Peg + Cat iPad app

You can also download the new Peg + Cat iPad app (featuring a song for which I wrote the music, " You Can Count on Me"); visit (if you have little ones!) the corresponding PBS Kids website devoted to all things Peg + Cat (including lots of fun, math-related games :-)); and also find out a bit more about the girl who plays Peg, Hayley Faith Negrin, in this video (in which she cites "You Can Count On Me" as her favorite song from the show, I'm flattered to hear :-)):
In other summer news: in August, I brought the Harlem School of the Arts Jazz Quartet into Dubway Studios to record our first CD, "Youth Movement", from which we presented an excerpt at a big, private Gala that took place at Jazz at Lincoln Center this past Tuesday. Go here to read an interview HSA did with me about the project that will appear in their next email newsletter..
As producer of the CD and director of the band, I'm proud to say that it comes close to rivaling anything I've done previously myself as leader, despite featuring a 12-year-old pianist - my wunderkind prodigy student Matt Whitaker; a 15-year old drummer - Dominique Gervais; plus Franklin Rankin on guitar/sax and Oren Maximov on acoustic bass (both of them only 17!)
I was also thrilled to bring in as guests on the CD the great sax

Hamiet Bluiett

player Hamiet Bluiett - who recorded an amazing version of Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" (Bluiett was a member of Mingus' band in the 70's); and HSA Artist-in-Residence Arturo O'Farrill. Finally, I also perform a version of my own tune "Cubano-Funk" on piano, with Matt on Hammond B3 organ. Stay tuned for its eventual commercial release!
That's it for now - back to packing (and writing music!)
Sincerely,
D.D. Jackson
