Action Alert! Take Action to Support GMO Labeling: Oppose the New DARK Act This week the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee started marking up this bill. Senator Pat Roberts, chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has introduced a new bill that is even worse than the so-called DARK Act that was passed last year by the House. His bill goes further by putting the USDA (instead of the FDA) in charge of a voluntary labeling program. The proposed law would preempt states' ability to enact their own labeling laws; preempt GMO seed-labeling laws, including Vermont's, which has been in effect for several years; and set up an "educational" program to promote the virtues of biotechnology to consumers.
