Fall at the Creamery

Apples, pumpkins, and winter squashes
Locally grown winter squashes (from Crabapple Farm in Chesterfield and Scott Farm in Ashfield) are the perfect, colorful, and delicious fall food. Favorites for eating right away (because they don't last long) are the delicata and sweet dumpling. These single-serving-size squashes are delicate in flavor with a sweet nuttiness, so don't dress them up too much. They are delicious roasted with a little butter and simple spices such as a sprinkle of cinnamon or your favorite curry. Buttercups, butternuts, and acorns will be up next.
And the pumpkins--oh my! Buy a whole one, buy it in your beer, or buy it in your ice cream. Yes! Pumpkin ice cream from Maple Valley Creamery will be arriving this week. If you've never had a taste, it is incredible! For brews we again have Shipyard Pumpkinhead
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale and Wachusett Pumpkin. We also have two choices of apple ales this fall. For thirst quenching for all ages we have locally produced cider from Hilltop Orchard in Berkshire County's Richmond: single servings in the grab-and-go case and gallons and half gallons in our coolers. As the days get cooler, we will be serving this cider hot and mulled.

Apples
We have several early apples in the store, and six of the current choices are from Scott Farm in Dummerston, Vermont. On their 571-acre property, they produce 90 varieties of ecologically grown apples: heirloom apples such as Roxbury Russet, Belle de Boskoop, and Cox's Orange Pippin and unusual apples like Winter Banana and Hidden Rose--some of the finest in color, texture, and taste. At the Creamery we rotate our choices with the harvest. Scott Farm was featured a few days ago in an NPR segment on heirloom apples. LISTEN HERE. The bees, the trees, and the environment do a wonderful job and are gently assisted by the folks at Scott Farm. |

The Creamery also offers new HappySacks designs: organic, reusable sandwich and snack bags, as well as a new food-wrap for those who need to wrap a bigger sandwich or like to take burritos to work or school.

Capital Campaign: Almost There! Just seven days left and we could blow the roof off our goal of $245,000 Gifts or grants totaling $11,521 by next Tuesday (the end of September) will be matched by an additional $11,521 from our wonderful community supporter, making the campaign complete! To get us this close, SEVENTY people have provided gifts from $5 to $10,000 (and believe us, every dollar counts).
TWENTY-ONE people have provided member-owner loans between $1,000 and $20,000.
For these recent gifts and loans, over $50,000 in matching funds has been applied so far.
Help us wrap it up! Send an email to yes@oldcreamery.coop and tell us what you will do to help. We will get loan or gift information to you immediately. Our heartfelt thanks to all who have brought us to this "within spitting distance" place.

A dear friend and supporter of the Creamery, Barbara Spencer, died at home on Friday, September 19, surrounded by loved ones. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. Barbara became a member of the Co-op in the first week that we started signing up member-owners in the summer of 2011. She was an accomplished sculptress, artist, and photographer. See some of her work by clicking HERE. Many of the photos used on the Old Creamery Co-op's website were taken and donated by Barbara. She amassed a treasure trove of knowledge and photographs on moths and butterflies in her life. Sample more of her marvelous photographs by clicking HERE. The family requests that donations in Barbara's memory be given to the hospice of your choice. We will miss Barbara, and we hope that someone will step in to maintain the valuable information she shared with all of us. |
