It's Grilling time with Appalachian Naturals and Simply Organic

For those of you new to the area or who just haven't read the back of the bottle yet- Appalachian Naturals products are made just down the road in Goshen, MA by an awesome family who work hard to incorporate as many local farm products into their line of salad dressings, BBQ sauces, salsas and mustards. They use Mapleline Farm buttermilk in their Ranch dressing, local tomatoes and cilantro in BBQ and salsa, local maple syrup from Holiday Brook Farm in Dalton for their dressings and mustards. We love their Cherrywood BBQ (they designed it when their youngest thought everything was "too spicy"); it is round and full of flavor without the spice that most kids avoid. Want the spice? Jump on board with their Jamaican Habanero- made with Chocolate habanero peppers- we know folks who just eat this with a spoon.

We also just got in an array of Grilling Spice mixes from Simply Organic- these simple spice blends will jazz up your grilling with just a shake. Or you can mix the spices into a rub with a little fresh garlic, olive oil and coarse sea salt.

Local produce, Local plant starts

Local produce is BACK!! Kitchen Garden Organic Farm in Sunderland is bringing us: Spicy Salad Mix (a staff favorite), Arugula, Radish bunches and more every week.

Local asparagus from Hadley farms will be here until it runs out (try it on the grill!)

Rhubarb from Glenwood Farm in Worthington (Peri is using it in her amazing pies- it's the best)

and Local VT green leaf lettuce heads are finally here as well. We are waiting for local strawberries...impatiently.

Get your GARDEN ON!!! Windy Ridge Farm is bringing in lovely vegetable starts: kale, cabbage, squash, tomatoes, herbs, strawberries.  They have a great variety out there, and now's the time to plant!!!!!

Annual Meeting minutes and reports are now available

We held our second Annual Meeting on April 27, 2014 at the Community House in Cummington, MA. Of note was the approval by the Co-op to change our fiscal year to now match the calendar year. This was to allow for our busy summer/fall season to occur in the middle of our fiscal year and also to align with our year end reporting requirement to Florence Savings Bank.

Also, three people were elected as members of the Board of Directors: Peter Feitner, Wil Hastings, and Lori Holmes. Returning board members are Ann Irvine, John Jones, and Josh Wachtel.

Reports were given: President's Report, Treasurer's Report, Management Report, and Outreach Committee Report. Copies of these reports and minutes taken at the meeting are available in print form. Please contact Michael Kalagher, our General Manager, if you would like a copy.

DELI  UPDATE

Our hours have returned to normal with deli service until the store closes at 7:30.
We ask that Grilled Sandwich (Panini) orders and sliced meat and cheese orders be placed by 7pm so that we have time to fill these orders before shutting down the grill and cleaning the slicer.  You are always welcome and encouraged to call in orders to the deli!

DELI  MEATS AND CHEESES AT THE OLD CREAMERY--Check out our prices!  Our Boar's Head products are usually priced well below the same products in area supermarkets, and our house-roasted local turkey and local grass-fed roast beef are the best deal we've seen for comparable meats.

Remember, we do have only one slicer and it gets a lot of use in the summer season, so we recommend calling in your deli meat and cheese orders so we don't keep you waiting.  We are are also increasing the supply of sliced meats and cheeses available in the Grab and Go case--let us know if there are items you'd like to see stocked there!

Paper or plastic?  NO THANK YOU!

Hold the date Saturday, June 14th from 10 AM - 1PM

Join us for a bag sew and a pot luck lunch to support the Old Creamery Co-op's Bag Share Program.

It all started at the Creamery over five years ago. Under the tireless leadership of Leni Fried the Creamery has remained Bag Free for all this time and saved $30,000 and about 500 twenty-five-year-old-trees.

Sign up early. No experience necessary.

RSVP to Jack Nelson (volunteer@oldcreamery.coop).

The sustained success of this program requires periodic bag replenishment and many of your hands make that easy. And besides, its fun!

The skinny on skin!

It is that time of year again when both the sun and the bugs can sometimes be too much. We've got the solution with an array of natural and organic sunscreens and bug repellents.

The W.S. Badger Company (In N.H.) produces top quality sunscreen and bug repellents (sometimes in the same tube!!!!) Rated as a low hazard on the Skin Deep website (an independent rating agency that analyzes cosmetic products for hazardous ingredients), these broad spectrum sunscreens are creamy to put on and smell delicious in scents of lavender, citrus and vanilla; they also come unscented. They are made with sunflower oil, beeswax, and non-nano zinc oxide. Their bug balms are citronella tempered with cedar, rosemary, geranium and other essential oils that work to keep the black flies and mosquitoes at bay.

We have lots of other sunscreens to choose from including Nature's Gate, Acure Organics, Earth's Best & Kiss My Face. We also carry DEET-FREE, herbal bug repellents from a variety of sources. From right here in Worthington, we have Wiseways Herbals Bug Ease Oil with Citronella and other "bugs keep away" oils. As with all essential oil based bug repellents, these need to be applied every few hours to be effective. Always double check for tick exposure after playing outside.

Mass GMO labeling bill is at a tipping point.

House bill H.3996 is advancing nicely through committees due in large part to the many citizens who have contacted their state legislators and remained actively involved. This bill is expected to be put to a floor vote in the legislative session ending this July and it currently has just over half of the state legislators signed on to a "Dear Colleague" letter of support, including our own co-op member-owner Steve Kulik (Thank him Here

Add your visible support to the photo mosaic being brought to the State House next week. Act now at THIS LINK (scroll down)

Our friend and neighbor Bill Cummings passed away on May 21st. We will miss the wonderful spirit he brought to the Creamery in his twice per day visits. Our thoughts are with Nancy and Bill's very extended family.
