One of the best gifts we can give, not only over these holidays but throughout the year, is our time and talents to those we love and those in need. Cook a meal; take a walk in the woods; help with chores; teach a skill; treat someone to a local restaurant, theater, or musical venue; or simply send a thoughtful card from a local artist.

When you choose to purchase gifts, buy them directly from local artisans and craftspeople or through independent, locally owned stores. These practices ensure that your money stays in and recirculates in the local economy, supporting local jobs.

The Creamery is one of many locally owned businesses (in fact we have close to 700 owners), and we have many gift choices for this season.

Wine and Cheese

We have a wide selection of delicious cheeses from throughout New England and the world. We have 60 wines to choose from to complement our cheeses, a third of which cost under $10. Stock up for those parties you might attend or simply for your own indulgence.

Need a case of your favorite wine for a party or individual gift giving? We will order one for you, get it as fast as possible, and take off 15% on orders placed by December 24. If you would like a mix and match case of what we have on the shelves, we will take 10% off.

Cheese of the Week

Most Saturdays we have a tasting cheese to let shoppers sample the many different and delicious cheeses available. This week's choice is Sonnet from Big Picture Farm In Townshend, Vermont. Big Picture Farm is animal welfare approved and has a flock of 28 Saanen, Alpine, and Nubian goats.

Sonnet is a classic aged tomme made from raw farmstead goat milk. Following the model of a classically aged tomme makes sonnet a delicious, creamy, aromatic, and slightly piquant cheese with an extremely pleasant flavor. It's clean yet complex, sophisticated yet rustic.

Come in this Saturday and have a taste. We hope you'll enjoy it! Remember, we'll take 10% off the regular price all day.

Gift Baskets for the Holidays

We have a number of seasonal Gift Baskets put together with different themes; Chocolate Lovers, Local Hero, and Mediterranean Delicacies, are a few of the choices on hand. Let us know if you would like us to put together a unique basket of the items you choose. You can purchase one of our African baskets (large or small) to present your selections in, or we can supply and wrap your gift choices in a wicker basket for a $10 charge. Note: We may not have the staff on hand to immediately prepare your personalized basket at the time of purchase, so we may ask you to return a bit later to pick up your gift basket. Your receipt at checkout will function as your claim check.

Give a Gift of Knowledge

The Creamery's great collection of books will be on sale for 20% off through December 24. Many of our books are signed copies by local authors including best-selling authors on issues of crucial importance in today's world. Our collection includes many DIY books on topics like gardening and gathering, cooking, canning, cheese making, freezing, fermenting, felling firewood, beekeeping, building, raising animals and making cheese and sausage from what they provide, and many other topics that support Hilltown self-sufficiency in the old Yankee tradition. We also have a small but quality selection of children's books by talented local authors and illustrators. Stock up on great gifts for the holidays while these titles last.

Ski Local, Ski Green

The Old Creamery Co-op and Berkshire East in Charlemont are teaming up for some winter fun. Present your Co-op member-owner card and you can purchase season passes at a discount of 10% or more. Want to add a Family Student or Family Junior pass to your adult season pass? You can do that as well for a similar discount (slightly under 10%).

Just want to ski a few times this season? We will be announcing several Old Creamery Co-op Special Saturday nights in January and February where you can show your member-owner card and ski for just $10. This is more than 60% off the regular night-skiing ticket price. Look for those dates as we get closer to Christmas.

Berkshire East is the first ski area in the nation to produce 100% of its electricity from an onsite, renewable source, namely a 900-kwh wind turbine at the top of the mountain.

Enjoy low carbon footprint skiing and tell them the Co-op sent you!

Become a member-owner on or before  January 11, support your community cooperative business, save on your purchases, and save on your skiing.

Consider giving a holiday gift of a membership in the Co-op. We will give you a gift certificate with Co-op membership cards attached. It's a great stocking stuffer!

Remember those in need at this time of year

The Creamery is proud to support the efforts of Tapestry Health a local, community-based
nonprofit in western Massachusetts that offers affordable, high-quality family planning services, reproductive health exams, STI screenings, HIV counseling and testing, needle exchange, insurance enrollment, outreach efforts, and a WIC nutrition program. Many of its clients are unemployed, poor, and/or homeless and cannot afford such basic items as clothing and blankets. As the days get shorter and the nights grow colder, these clients face a long winter. Help Tapestry keep them warm during this time.

Now through December 13, Tapestry has a large plastic bin for your donations just inside the west entrance to the store. So far our wonderful caring community has filled the large bin twice over and we are thrilled every time we must call them for pickup. Donate blankets or warm articles of clothing (socks and underwear must be new), and for "giving the heat" the Creamery will warm you up with a free cup of coffee, tea, or hot cider. Thank you.
