The Milk Person (aka the Milkman) Has Arrived! ...with Mapleline Farm milk in glass bottles! We have milk in glass bottles: half-gallon and quart sizes as well as quarts of chocolate milk and coffee milk. There's a $2.00 deposit on each glass bottle, refundable, of course, when you return the empty. Milk in glass bottles harkens back to the days of milkmen and home delivery (which Mapleline Farm still offers to its customers in the Pioneer Valley). We are very happy that there is now an alternative to plastic milk jugs! Other Mapleline products we have added include half-and-half in pints, heavy cream in pints, and 12-ounce coffee or strawberry milk in our Grab 'n' Go case. Visit Mapleline HERE, a local family farm since 1904. |

Cooperative Values in Action! Annual Co-op Meeting Is This Sunday!
Come join us this Sunday for our first-ever Old Creamery Co-op Annual Meeting. (The meeting kicks off at 3 p.m. in the Cummington Community House, 33 Main Street, Cummington village.) Here you can meet and talk with prospective board members as well as your fellow "cooperators," other member-owners! As a member-owner, you will have received a ballot in the mail to vote in the elections for the board of drectors. If you haven't cast your vote by mail-in ballot, you can cast your ballot in person at the Annual Meeting. There will be informative presentations to enhance your understanding of how we fared this past year, our first year of operating as a cooperative, as well as our vision for our future. As a member-owner, you can help put the second cooperative principle -- democratic member control -- into action by making your voice heard! You can exercise your rights by voting and your responsibilities by being an informed member-owner. There will be a Q&A and lots of time for your feedback to be heard. Read more about the meeting and review the slate of candidates for the board of directors by clicking HERE. We look forward to seeing many of you on Sunday!
The Old Creamery Co-op adheres to the Cooperative Values and Principles of the International Cooperative Alliance. A Statement of Cooperative Identity was adopted by the International Cooperative Alliance in 1995. It defines a cooperative as an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.
Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility, and caring for others.
The seven cooperative principles are 1) voluntary and open membership, 2) democratic member control, 3) member economic participation, 4) autonomy and independence, 5) education, training, and information, 6) cooperation among cooperatives, and 7) concern for community. Our Co-op on the Telly WGBY-TV, Public Television for Western New England, had a crew at the Creamery last month and recently televised their nicely done five-minute piece on our beloved Old Creamery Co-op. If you didn't get a chance to see it, make yourself a small dish of non-GMO popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the show by clicking HERE. |

Cheese of the Week
This week's featured cheese is Grafton Naked Cheddar from nearby Grafton, Vermont. This award-winning, unique cheddar uses non-GMO microbial rennet. Made from thermalized milk containing no artificial hormones, it's put into a cave to age "naked" (not wrapped in cloth) and quickly develops its own natural rind. As a result, it reaches maturity quickly and boasts a full and complex buttery profile, achieving a delicate mushroomy note after just 60 days. This cheese is really delicious. So come in this Saturday and have a taste. You won't be disappointed! We recommend you try this cheese with a bottle of Quinta do Casal Monteiro, an award-winning yet affordable white wine from Portugal that we've added to our selections.Remember, we'll take 10% off the regular price of this cheddar all day! |

Fresh Bread, Every Day from the Creamery Bakers
Peri, Judy, Lori, Amy, and Avery make the beautiful loaves that come out of our ovens every day of the week. We use great ingredients, including King Arthur unbleached flour; organic whole wheat flour; organic oats, millet, and sesame seeds; honey from Bear Meadow Apiary in Ashfield; and grapeseed or olive oil.
If you come by the store in the late morning, you're likely to catch the scent of freshly baked bread just coming out of the oven, ready to be used for our deli sandwiches or taken home to enjoy. Feel free to call and reserve a loaf -- some days it sells out quickly!
Many of you have asked for our bread-baking schedule so you'll know when to stop in for a favorite loaf. So here it is, subject to occasional changes:
Sunday: Honey Millet Monday: Sesame Semolina (Honey Wheat occasionally) Tuesday: Sesame Oat Wednesday: Rosemary Thursday: Honey Millet Friday: Buttermilk White Saturday: Seven-grain Wild Rice Every Day: Focaccia and Cornbread
Enjoy!

Time to Think Turkey!
As in years past, you can order your Thanksgiving turkey through the Co-op. We're now accepting pre-orders for those delicious Diemand Farm free-range fresh turkeys. They cost $3.99 per pound for birds weighing 12 to 27+ pounds. Peter, Faith, and Anne Diemand (and a host of farm helpers) have been raising hormone-free and antibiotic-free turkeys in Wendell, Mass., for the past 25 years and have been a local family farm since 1936.
Sign up soon and specify the size you want. We will have your turkey at the store for pickup just before Thanksgiving. The signup sheets are at the register. Just ask the cashier.

Mark These Dates
- Next Thursday, October 24, we will be closing the east lot for paving. The lot will be closed for parking until Friday afternoon.
- Wednesday, October 30, is GMO Awareness Day. Look for an update on this important day in next week's newsletter.
- And stayed tuned to future newsletters. We'll be closing for a day in the not-so-distant future for our final reset of shelving and to complete our inside renovations. Once the date is set, we'll announce it here and in the store.

Many items are on sale every week at the Creamery. Look for the brightly colored shelf tags. These items are 15%-45% off regular prices. We work hard to find bargains on many different items, including staple groceries, treats like chocolate, juices, refrigerated items, personal care products, and supplements. The shelf tags indicate when the sale price expires. Some sale items are one-time opportunities that remain on sale until sold out. Many are purchasing opportunities that can be replenished over several weeks at great prices. Enjoy the savings!
