Celebrate!
Saturday, September 28
with a special
Member Owner Appreciation Day
Dario Coletta hard at work

We've got a lot to celebrate. What's special?  Our east parking lot is now greatly expanded and usable by all. The new sign in front of the store is installed. Our beautiful outside dining patio will be open on Saturday. AND there are celebratory events all day (see schedule below).

Member-owners of our Co-op receive 10% off

all day including 10% off our many sale items (see list below). As on other appreciation days there are a few exceptions - tobacco, alcohol, newspapers, and milk cannot be included in the member owner discounts. If you are not yet a member-owner you can join the Co-op on Saturday and immediately take advantage of 10% off all day. You can pay your membership in full or with small monthly payments. There are applications on the cafe tables or any of our staff would be happy to get you a brochure. Return it to the cashier with the payment you choose and that's it. You are now a member-owner of our Co-op.

We celebrate and appreciate our 639 member-owners who have so wonderfully supported our Co-op journey, particularly through our renovations and more broadly in the community. Thank you.

The Day's Events

What can be better than fresh apple cider on a perfect New England fall day? Mid-morning we will set up an apple cider press near the new patio. The weather forecast is "sunny and beautiful 70 degrees."  We'll need a lot of "kid power" to press those apples so bring the family and enjoy as much cider as you can drink.

Also outside, Bart's Ice Cream will be scooping out free samples of their great products. If you are adventurous consider a Cider Float. The Creamery has carried Bart's in cones, cups, and pints for many years and Bart's owners Gary Schaefer and Barbara Fingold are member-owners of the Old Creamery Co-op.

Cider and ice cream will be available until mid-afternoon.

Inside the store, the Wistaria String Quartet will make your shopping experience memorable from 11:30 to 12:30. The quartet is a newly formed ensemble of experienced string players who live in western Mass: Sarah Briggs and Kaila Graef, violins; Delores Thayer, viola; and Rebecca Hartka, cello. This little concert will include works by Jay Ungar (Ashokan Farewell) and Marc O'Connor (Appalachian Waltz) and a bit of Dvorak! The quartet will be in concert at the Bryant Homestead on Sunday. Click HERE for more information.

Member-owner Alan Weisman's long awaited new book Countdown was published this week by Little, Brown, and Company. This is Alan's follow-up to his best seller The World Without Us. Alan will be on hand to sign your "hot off the presses" copy of this important book beginning at 1:30. Some things being said about Countdown:

"Spirited descriptions, a firm grasp of complex material, and a bomb defuser's steady precision make for a riveting read.... Weisman's cogent and forthright global inquiry, a major work, delineates how education, women's equality, and family planning can curb poverty, thirst, hunger, and environmental destruction. Rigorous and provoking." -Donna Seaman, Booklist (starred review)

"In Countdown, Alan Weisman, a journalist probing whether a sustainable balance between nature and the human population can be achieved, offers a key message to guide future action." -Nature

"This is not a jeremiad but a realistic, vividly detailed exploration of the greatest problem facing our species." -Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Provocative and sobering, this vividly reported book raises profound concerns about our future." -Publishers Weekly (starred review)

The Co-op has a supply of Countdown for sale at the store. Buy one while they last and be one of the first to take home your signed copy.

Here's Some News from the Kitchen

As part of our tastings on member-owner appreciation day, try some of our Creamery-made Cashew Coconut Granola! Made with organic coconut oil and local maple syrup, it's vegan, gluten free, and almost completely organic (this week, the only cashews we could get were conventionally grown, but it's usually ALL organic). Customers tell us they eat it with yogurt, on ice cream, and by the handful. More than one has told us "it's addictive!" Try it on Saturday and let us know what you think!

Also, new on Saturday, for the first time we will offer Creamery-made frozen pizza dough, made from King Arthur unbleached flour, water, yeast, salt, and a little extra-virgin olive oil.

Many items are on sale every week at the Creamery. Look for the brightly colored shelf tags. These items are 15%-45% off regular prices. We work hard to find bargains on many different items, including staple groceries, treats like chocolate, juices, refrigerated items, personal care products, and supplements. The shelf tags indicate when the sale price expires. Some sale items are one-time opportunities that remain on sale until sold out. Many are purchasing opportunities that can be replenished over several weeks at great prices. Enjoy the savings!
