Cold Weather Tips for Pets

The Animal Shelter is offering useful tips to pet owners to keep their furry friends are safe and comfortable when the temperature drops:

Shelter: When a cold spell hits, make sure all pets have shelter from the cold and wet. Bring your pets inside, if possible.

Grooming: Keep your pet's coat long to provide warmth.  If your pet needs a bath make sure your pet is thoroughly dry before going outside for that daily walk.

Food: Check with your veterinarian on the best food to keep your pet in tip top shape.

Got Cats?: Keep them inside to protect them from injury, diseases, and wildlife.

Identification: Make sure your pet has an ID on at all times. Moreno Valley Animal Shelter offers microchips for only $16.

For more information about keeping your pets safe during this winter season, please contact the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter at 951.413.3790. For other helpful tips visit the city's website and click on "Animal Shelter".

Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips

As temperatures drop, many City residents will use different methods to heat their homes, which, if not careful, can increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, kerosene, oil, wood or charcoal is burned. When appliances that burn these fuels are not properly used or not maintained, the amount of CO produced can be deadly.

Carbon Monoxide is commonly known as the "silent killer" because it is completely odorless, tasteless, and invisible. CO is the leading cause of unintentional poisoning deaths in America.  Click here for more information on CO safety.

blackhistoryAssemblymember Medina Celebrates California's Black History

Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) will participate in  the Black History Parade on February 9th in Riverside at the Riverside Community College campus.  Medina represents California's 61st Assembly District, which consists of Riverside, Moreno Valley, and Perris. The theme for this year's observation is At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the 1963 March in Washington D.C.

"During Black History Month, we pay tribute to the history of all African Americans," said Medina. "I am pleased to recognize their achievements and hard work which have contributed to the success of our state and nation."

In the observance of  Black History Month we remind young Americans of the excellent role models they can find among the many African Americans we honor this month, including: The first African American big leaguer, Jackie Robinson; Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall; inventor, George Washington Carver; the first Dr. to perform open heart surgery, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams; and, of course, our 44th President, President Barack Obama.
