Fire Department - Spark of Love
Every year, tens of thousands of children experience a Christmas morning with no gifts to open. To help tackle this crisis, the firefighters in Moreno Valley, in cooperation with CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire and KABC Channel 7, host a "Spark of Love Toy Drive". Residents are encouraged to drop off a new, unwrapped toy or sports equipment at any local fire station listed below:

The Moreno Valley Fire Department requests that all toy donations be delivered by December 20th. Any toys collected after this date may not reach a needy child until next Christmas.

For more information, please call 951.486.6780 or the "Spark of Love Toy Drive" hotline at 951.538.6910.  For eligibility requirements to receive toys for a child in need, please contact the Moreno Valley Community Assistance Program at 951.485.7792.

Police Department -
Holiday Cheer Program

The Moreno Valley Police Department will be hosting its 19th annual Holiday Cheer Program.  Local needy families are invited to a catered holiday party complete with food, gifts, live entertainment, games and other festivities.  In addition, each family will receive a turkey dinner, complete with all the trimmings, courtesy of local grocers.  To be a success, the Moreno Valley Police Department needs the support of businesses, residents and civic leaders like you.

Date: Friday, December 21, 2012,

Location: Grand Valley Ballroom at the
Moreno Valley Conference & Recreation Center,
14075 Frederick Street.

To contribute, please contact the Moreno Valley Police Department's Problem Oriented Policing Team at 951.486.6924.

March JPA -
Christmas for Kids

The March Joint Powers Authority invites you to share the joy of Christmas with an underprivileged child by giving gifts to the children in the March JPA's homeless assistance programs. Names and Ages of the children will be available after November 14th.

Deadline: Friday, December 14, 2012

Drop off gifts at the

March JPA Offices, 23555 Meyer Dr.

Riverside, CA 92518

Contact Nina Schumacher at March JPA, (951) 656.7000, for the name(s) of one of more than 100 children in need this Holiday Season.

Decorate Safely

Decorating for the winter holidays is fun but can lead to tragedy if you don't practice fire safety. Following a few simple fire safety tips can keep electric lights, candles, and the ever popular Christmas tree from creating a tragedy.

  • Don't place your live Christmas tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent.
  • Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times.
  • Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood-burning stove.
  • Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up.
  • Use only nonflammable decorations.

Click here for more information on Christmas Tree Safety.

Staying Safe and Warm

Heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths. Almost half of home heating equipment fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February. Some simple steps can prevent most heating-related fires from happening.  Click here for Home Heating Safety Tips.

The 10-Minute Holiday Lights
Safety Test

Take a close look at your holiday lights, cords, and power strips, and the outlets they're plugged into, with these questions in mind:

  • Are all electrical cords and light strands in good condition? If not, throw them away.
  • Are your outlets, extension cords or surge protectors overloaded? Usage should never exceed recommended wattage.
  • Are all wires free of puncture by staples, tacks or nails? If you need to hang wires or cords, the safe way is to loop a plastic zip tie around the light strand, and secure the zip tie to the wall.
  • Can you easily shut off the lights before leaving home? Leaving lights on can present an unnecessary fire hazard.
Click here for information on how ENERGY STARŪ qualified light strings can save energy and money or to find out more tips about how to reduce your energy consumption when traveling away from home this season.
