Cari italiani e cari amici dell'Italia,

Nicola De Santis

---------------------------

Fellow Italians and dear friends of Italy,

First and foremost I want to send you my best wishes on the occasion of the Italian National day. June 2nd represents the birth of the Italian Republic, an important occasion to celebrate both the goals we reached as a country but also to witness the love that ties us to Italy.

During the month of June we will have several events, particularly tied to music and Italian opera. I wanted to especially point out the trilogy (Ulisse, Poppea, Orfeo) of 17th century's composer Claudio Monteverdi which will be held at the Boston Early Music Festival. Giacomo Puccini's "La BohŔme", organized by the North End Music and Performing Arts Center - NEMPAC, will be playing at Faneuil Hall from June 25th to June 27th.

Finally, for those who have not yet visited, I would like to remind you that the fantastic "Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty" exposition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston will be closing on June 14th.

Sending my best regards and happy reading,

Nicola De Santis

For the June 2015 Festival, our undertaking to produce all three of the extant operas of Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)-The Monteverdi Trilogy-with a cohesive artistic and scholarly vision, is a momentous occasion in the modern revival of Baroque opera. Monteverdi was the first great genius in the history of opera, and the imposing quality of these individual works is universally recognized. Ulisse, Poppea, and Orfeo have inspired a virtual explosion of performance and scholarship over the past half century; BEMF's incomparable team of internationally respected leaders-Musical Directors Paul O'Dette and Stephen Stubbs, Stage Director Gilbert Blin, and Concertmaster Robert Mealy-together with an all-star cast of singers and instrumentalists, will bring all three of these iconic masterpieces to life, in multiple and conveniently scheduled staged performances throughout our extraordinary Festival Week.

Tickets for The Monteverdi Trilogy are on sale now! The full schedule of concerts and events for the week-long Festival to be announced later this year. Save the dates for this extraordinary musical event.

Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty

In an intimate exhibition featuring master drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, the star is a study of an

angel that the art historian Sir Kenneth Clark called "the most beautiful...in the world." Leonardo da Vinci's accomplishments in art and science find their common ground in his drawings, into which he poured the full fervor of his intelligence and creative powers. Throughout his career, Leonardo experimented with various types of drawings: scientific studies; grotesque caricatures of craggy faces; and the most beautiful faces of men and women that he could imagine. Many of Leonardo's most admired drawings are featured in this rich and varied selection of 29 sheets and a manuscript, opening on April 15, fittingly Leonardo's birthday.

One revelation for visitors will be the rarely displayed Codex on Flight, one of Leonardo's most perceptive scientific explorations, with its nearly hidden self-portrait of Leonardo as a young man, a recent discovery. The exhibition features rare loans from a number of Italian public collections, including the Uffizi Museum in Florence, the Biblioteca Reale in Turin, and the Casa Buonarroti, the ancestral property of Michelangelo in Florence, which has lent eight drawings by that master.
