---------------------------

Dear Italians and dear friends of Italy,

In May a rich array of events relating to our country await us.

I would like to point out on May 11th the seminar "Innovative Technologies for the Food of the Future" with special guest speakers from the world of business (Viola Buitoni and Claudia Vitelli) and from the academic world (Fiorenzo Omenetto and Cale Harper). The event is closely tied to Expo 2015, "Feeding the planet. Energy for Life", the universal exposition that today opened its gates and during the next six months, until October 31st , will host around 20 million visitors. We are waiting for you! It will be the best way to prepare for the Expo Milano 2015,  an appointment we cannot miss.

I also want to bring to your attention the upcoming event "Promoting Italian Technology solutions in USA: Opportunities for Cooperation" organized by the Italian Trade Commission on May 27th which has, as its the primary goal, to favor collaborations and the exchange of knowledge between Italy and the United States. Scientists, researchers, investors and entrepreneurs interested in starting new projects and explore scientific and technological collaborations are invited.

I wish to extend my congratulations to the newly elected members of Comites.  For the good of the community I want to stress the full collaboration of this Consulate with the members with the hope it will become an important center for initiatives and proposals which will favor the vibrant Italian and Italian-American community in this Consular jurisdiction.

Kind regards and happy reading to all.

Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty

In an intimate exhibition featuring master drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, the star is a study of an

angel that the art historian Sir Kenneth Clark called "the most beautiful...in the world." Leonardo da Vinci's accomplishments in art and science find their common ground in his drawings, into which he poured the full fervor of his intelligence and creative powers. Throughout his career, Leonardo experimented with various types of drawings: scientific studies; grotesque caricatures of craggy faces; and the most beautiful faces of men and women that he could imagine. Many of Leonardo's most admired drawings are featured in this rich and varied selection of 29 sheets and a manuscript, opening on April 15, fittingly Leonardo's birthday.

One revelation for visitors will be the rarely displayed Codex on Flight, one of Leonardo's most perceptive scientific explorations, with its nearly hidden self-portrait of Leonardo as a young man, a recent discovery. The exhibition features rare loans from a number of Italian public collections, including the Uffizi Museum in Florence, the Biblioteca Reale in Turin, and the Casa Buonarroti, the ancestral property of Michelangelo in Florence, which has lent eight drawings by that master.

Italy During and After the 2008-9 Crisis. Is it Over? And What are its Country Specific and Euro-area Causes and Impact -

Italy During and After the 2008-9 Crisis.  Is it Over? And What are its Country Specific and Euro-area Causes and Impact

The Italian economy has not performed very well in the aftermath of the 2008-09 global financial crisis. This has reflected a combination of factors, some of them pertaining to the overall Euro-area crisis, some of them Italy-specific. Now Italy seems to be emerging from the crisis, although the recovery is still tentative. Why has Italy suffered so much from the 2008-09 crisis? Has its economic outlook now really improved? And how will policies and developments in the rest of the European Union affect Italy?

Romantic Operas of Puccini

click on image for more information

As with all arts experiences, we tend to enjoy the experiences that we have a frame of reference for, such as seeing a favorite band play familiar songs, or seeing an art exhibit where you know a personal history of the artist. Often, we go to see a performance and say, "that was great (or terrible) but I really did not understand it!"

The goal of this workshop is to break down and delve deeper into the world of Puccini and his famous romantic operas, with a special focus on his masterpiece, La Bohme. In addition to the four workshop class offerings, participants will go see the NEMPAC Opera Project production of La Bohme as a class in June.

Workshop participants will share in a social and musical experience in conjunction with receiving an educational context for which to enjoy and evaluate the opera experience. The workshop is geared for both the seasoned opera lover and those new to the opera performance world.

Taught by renown educator and opera coach, Thomas Enman, this is one adult workshop not to be missed! Please contact workshop administrator, Rebecca Rapoport-Cole, at [email protected] should you have any questions!

Dates: Sundays, May 31st, June 7th, June 14th, June 21st

Time: Sundays, 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m.; 1.5 hour workshop sessions.
Location: 9 Hull Street.
