The Mercenary
(1968) dir Sergio Corbucci w/Franco Nero, Jack Palance, Tony Musante, Giovanna Ralli [111 min]
 |
THE MERCENARY - TRAILER
|
Most people know of the great Sergio Leone, but if there were a runner-up prize for best Spaghetti Western director, it would certainly go to Sergio Corbucci.
Several of his films were an influence on DJANGO UNCHAINED including this semi-comedic gem and, obviously, his 1966 feature Django, also starring Franco Nero. Here Nero stars as a Polish mercenary who hooks up with a Mexican revolutionary (Musante), and they both end up in a cat-and-mouse chase with ruthless bounty hunter "Curly" (played by the always-sinister Jack Palance).

This event brings together the Italian Sailing School "Mascalzone Latino", run by Vincenzo Onorato and three sailing schools of Boston
 | Click on image to open file |
Founded by Vincenzo Onorato, Mascalzone Latino is a racing team that competes in many different international sailing formats. The team also took part in two of America's Cups in the past. The Mascalzone Latino School of Sailing was founded with the goal of taking kids off the streets of underserved areas of Naples, Italy, and giving them the tremendous opportunity to learn not just how to sail, but how to perform sea-related jobs such as fixing boats, repairing engines, while also encouraging them to perform better in school. The Mascalzone Latino school has chosen these three athletes (two students and one instructor) not only for their sailing skills but also based on their academic merit and good behavior. Quoting Mr. Onorato's words: "When you are sailing it's necessary to trust one another and work together constructively, otherwise you don't succeed; the same can be said about life...what we have created is not only a school of sailing, but of life as well."
Co-founded by a young group of professionals, Professionisti Italiani a Boston is a nonprofit group reuniting approximately 1,000 Italian professionals of all ages in the Boston area, 90% of whom speak Italian fluently. The group focuses on providing opportunities for educational growth, networking, collaborations, use of the Italian language, and support to Italian activities in Boston and around the world.

Journey to Italy
New DCP restoration
(1954) dir Roberto Rossellini w/Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders [97 min]
 | Journey to Italy trailer |
Among the most influential films of the postwar era, Roberto Rossellini's JOURNEY TO ITALY charts the declining marriage of a British couple (Bergman and Sanders) on a trip in the countryside near Naples. More than just an anatomy of a relationship, Rossellini's masterpiece is a heartrending work of emotional transcendence and profound spirituality.
Hailed as a groundbreaking work of modernism by the critics of Cahiers du Cinéma and named by Martin Scorsese as one of his favorite films, JOURNEY TO ITALY is a breathtaking cinematic landmark.
We're thrilled to launch our first major slate of repertory programming on our new DCP projection system with this long-unavailable international classic. A favorite of Brattle audiences in years past (it was a flagship film in frequent Italian cinema series), JOURNEY TO ITALY gradually fell victim to poorly maintained prints until it was simply no longer available for regular screenings. This will be the first time we have featured it in almost 15 years, and it screens in a gorgeous new restoration of the essential English-language version of the film by Janus Films.

La Dolce Vita
(1960) dir Federico Fellini w/Marcello Mastroianni, Anouk Aimée, Anita Ekberg [174 min]
In LA DOLCE VITA, Fellini's frequent collaborator Marcello Mastroianni plays a member of the paparazzi - back when that was a cool thing to be. Fellini's deft and gorgeous filmmaking brings the life of swinging Rome onto screen with exuberance and finesse.

May 20th - June 28th |Scollay Square Gallery and the Mayor's Gallery | Boston City Hall | 1 City Hall Square, Boston, MA
LOOKING FOR HEMINGWAY by Franco Azzinari
Scollay Square Gallery and the Mayor's Gallery inside Boston City Hall will host Italian artist Franco Azzinari's exhibit, Looking for Hemingway, for more than a month. This exhibit will include ten paintings and drawings along with two video presentations.
The project Looking for Hemingway was born in 2000 during a visit to Cojimar (Cuba) where Azzinari met Gregorio Fuentes, a friend and travel companion of the celebrated writer. Through Fuentes' stories, the artist falls in love with Hemingway's life and during the course of his travels to Cuba, Franco Azzinari creates a series of drawings and paintings, depicting in large part Cojimar, and friends Gregorio Fuentes, Carnero Osvaldo and Pedro, the landscapes and fishermen of the village. These experiences inspired Hemingway to write his novel, The Old Man and the Sea, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954.
Among the diverse works on display are paintings and drawings reflecting the writer's trips to Kenya, during which the Masai populations were depicted - including women, children and warriors - Debba, the African woman Hemingway loved, and the African savannah environment with its own fauna.
Two videos show Azzinari's intent to record the fishermen of Cojimar as he talks to them about Hemingway and the typical dance of the Masai people, and the animals native to the area.
For more information on the artistic life and the works of Azzinari, visit the web site, www.francoazzinari.it
