HOLD FIRM TO FULL VICTORY
On October 6, 1968 Rev. Troy Perry led the first Metropolitan Community Church worship service in a small house in Huntington Park, CA. On October 6, 2014 the Supreme Court decided not to hear any cases on same-sex marriage from the lower courts, tacitly approving lower court decisions to strike down same-sex marriage bans.
Though only a partial victory, the Supreme Court's decision to not decide is a fitting birthday gift to MCC. Our founder, The Rev. Elder Troy Perry, performed the first same-sex wedding ever in the United States only a few weeks after that first worship service, in December of 1968. Relationship Equality remained a passion for Rev. Perry throughout his service as Founder and Moderator of MCC. In his "retirement" he continues as a voice for Marriage Equality, Trans* Equality and other human rights issues.
Admittedly, there is more work to do and more legal barriers ahead in states such as Alabama, Florida and Louisiana. MCC will be at the forefront of breaking through those barriers. MCC Moderator The Rev. Elder Dr. Nancy Wilson said, "We look forward to full implementation of Marriage Equality all over the United States and around the world. When it comes to Marriage Equality, justice is raining down like water."
Locally, MCCDC is working for justice, including efforts for Trans* Equality, economic fairness, and the Walk to End HIV
My message for this Sunday is drawn from Psalm 106 and Philippians 4:1-9. On one hand Philippians 4:4 reminds us to celebrate the victories of our faith: "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say, rejoice!" On the other hand Psalm 106 invites us "to persevere with utter trust" as we hold firm to the full victory we anticipate.
Inspiring worship this Sunday will include an invitation to victorious living in all aspects of our lives. We will also honor the founding of MCC in October of 1968. Together, with hearts raised high, we will continue our persistent journey as a justice loving beloved people of God. See you Sunday!

MCC STATEMENT
OF FAITH REPORT
The report presents the results of the first round of surveys developed by the Commission on the MCC Statement of Faith. Along with feedback forms on the MCC denominational website, the surveys were launched with the intention of initiating a grass-roots dialogue with the various constituencies of MCC as we begin our task: to review, renew, and update our MCC Statement of Faith as authorized by the 2013 General Conference.

MCCDC is sponsoring a group to attend
"Taking Church to the Community Conference"
Saturday, November 1, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Wesley Theological Seminary
No longer can we simply ask, "What can we do to get people to come to our church?" We must also consider, "How can we go into the world to encounter those in need of the gospel?" At Taking Church to the Community, you will explore strategies your congregation can use to reach beyond its walls with worship, community events, ministries, and service - meeting community members where they are and moving them toward discipleship.
Taking Church to the Community is ecumenical and designed for both laity and clergy.
Presentations and Workshops
- The Outside-in Church
- Go Where the People Are
- Becoming an Interactive Congregation
- Blessing Your Community
- Discipleship 101: Getting Ready
- Ministries and Community Engagement: Heading Out!
- Reaching Out through Community Events
If you would like to attend, please contact Rev Cathy Alexander by October 21st at [email protected] or 202-638-7373.
