Eckerd leads nation again in Hollings Scholars

Seven Eckerd College students have won Hollings Scholarships, which will provide each with thousands of dollars in financial aid and a fully paid internship at a NOAA agency.

Eckerd's Hollings Scholars are among 150 students at 78 colleges and universities across the country to win the prestigious award. Eckerd students have won 62 Hollings Scholarships since the program began in 2005, more than at any other college or university in the country. Eckerd has been the top recipient of Hollings Scholarships from the beginning, a remarkable achievement for a liberal arts college with only 1,800 full-time undergraduate students.

The scholarships, named for former U.S. Senator Ernest Hollings of South Carolina, are designed to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science.

The 2015 Eckerd Hollings Scholars and their majors are Jason Baer of McLean, Va. (marine science and Spanish); Daniel Chapman of Fort Collins, Colo. (marine science and biochemistry); Brittany Evans of Hartwell, Ga. (marine science); Carina Graham of Potomac, Md. (biology and creative writing); Austin Hunter of Jacksonville, Ill. (marine science and biochemistry); Sarah Raney of Chesterfield, Mo. (marine science and environmental studies); and Jessica Richter of St. Charles, Ill. (marine science). Read more.

Five years later, BP oil spill impacts still unclear
To mark the fifth anniversary of the BP oil spill, the USF College of Marine Science held a news conference and panel discussion about the research done on the aftermath. The research, overseen by the Center for Integrated Modeling and Analysis of the Gulf Ecosystem, includes studies of sediment of the gulf  bottom conducted by Marine Science Professors David Hastings (right) and Gregg Brooks. During the event on Monday (April 20), Hastings said there are signs of recovery but that it is still too early to assess the long-term impacts. "For us in the scientific community, five years is a very short amount of time, so we still really don't know what the long-term impacts are. Five years is not very long in scientific terms," Hastings said. | WTSP-TV | WTVT-TV
Fotopoulos honored by FHSAA Hall of Fame
Women's Soccer Coach Danielle Fotopoulos was recently named to the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

Fotopoulos, a member of the 1999 World Cup championship team and the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division 1 history, was one of 11 top-tier athletes inducted this past Sunday (April 26). The newest members of the Hall of Fame include former NFL players Daunte Culpepper and Kevin Fagan, former Tampa Bay Rays player Tino Martinez, former WNBA player Tammy Jackson, pro golfer Andy Bean and Olympic swimmer Nicole Haislett.

Fotopoulos has been coaching Women's Soccer at Eckerd since 2010 and has taken her team to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament twice. She was an All-America player for the University of Florida, where she was a two-time SEC Player of the Year and the Soccer America Player of the Year in 1998 after leading the Gators to an NCAA championship. The offensive threat is the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I history.

She also was a two-time All-Star selection in the Women's United Soccer Association.

But it all began at Lyman High School in Longwood, where Fotopoulos graduated in 1994 after securing three soccer state titles, a state title in cross country and a conference tennis championship.
First Food Security Conference a success

Scientists, policymakers and the general public came together at Wireman Chapel last week for the first Eckerd College Food Security Conference. Among topics discussed were the science and regulation of GMOs, the overemphasis of growing crops for biofuels instead of food and how ending food waste could help feed the world's growing population.

The two-day conference (April 24-25) was sponsored by Eckerd; the Institute on Science for Global Policy; and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, to help shape public policy about food that is grounded in science. Students in Assistant Professor of Biology Liza Conrad's Food Security class will compile the presentations and recommendations to be distributed to policymakers. WTSP-TV | Tampa Bay Times

Art students, professor liven up Health Center

Community service is a core value at Eckerd. One recent example: Professor of Visual Arts Kirk Ke Wang and some of his painting students created a mural recently in a section of Westminster Suncoast that serves residents with dementia. "Most of Westminster Suncoast serves active residents who live in their villa homes, but some, over time, may be diagnosed with dementia and may ultimately wind up living in our Health Center," said Executive Director ??. "Our hope is to keep all residents engaged and living actively. This mural really beautifies an area for this very special population."
