Donations sought for the 29th Annual Marine Yard Sale to support EC-SAR
The 29th Annual Eckerd College Marine Yard Sale will be held Saturday, March 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Eckerd Waterfront. All proceeds support Eckerd College Search and Rescue (EC-SAR), the volunteer student organization founded in 1971 that provides free maritime search and rescue to the Tampa Bay boating community -- the only college marine rescue service in the country. EC-SAR received widespread attention recently when team members recovered the body of 5-year-old Phoebe Jonchuck after her father allegedly threw her from a bridge leading to the Sunshine Skyway. It was one of more than 600 incidents the team responds to annually. Student volunteers told the Associated Press last year that they learn invaluable lessons in life, leadership and their place in the world. Read more.

Police chief, a PEL grad, talks to ASPEC
St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway, a 1999 graduate of the Program for Experienced Learners, spoke to about 100 people at Lewis House on Wednesday, Feb. 18, about race relations in the city. He said the key to improving race relations is building personal relationships between the police and members of the community. To do that, he has told officers to get out of their vehicles and walk the neighborhoods to converse with residents. The talk was sponsored by the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College. Holloway, who earned a degree in Business Management, held his swearing-in ceremony at Eckerd. He has gotten rave reviews as police chief.

Overheard
"The most obvious potential benefit to an athlete is controlling inflammation and some of the aches and pains that relate to injury. If you lower inflammation, you will raise the pain threshold."
-Professor of Biology Greg Gerdeman, quoted in Runners World on why some runners use marijuana before they run.
"Proponents will tell you allowing concealed (weapons) on campus will protect female students from sexual assault. I would point out the obvious: You'll be arming the assailants too."
-Professor of Psychology Marjorie Sanfilippo, testifying before the Senate Criminal Justice Committee on a bill to allow concealed guns at state colleges and universities in Florida.
"Visiting @eckerdcollege tomorrow with @kinnes21 Decisions...decisions! Then back to the cold! Boo! Maybe we should stay!"
Kirsten Innes (@kirs10i) on Twitter.
"When I was there that was a flat pad of weeds and sand spurs that few students visited. The sailing team was there many Saturdays but other than that it was a waste land. Glad to see it transformed into an asset to campus life. I miss those evenings, relishing in the fact that I was NOT in New England for another snowstorm. Enjoy the view and relish the moment, for too soon it is past."
Will Nye '96, writing about a sunset photo from South Beach on the Eckerd Facebook page.
