Peer mentorship
program smooths
freshman transition

Marjorie Sanfilippo, Ph.D., associate dean of faculty and professor of psychology, spearheaded a peer mentorship program, now in its second year, that is designed to augment the three-week Autumn Term for new students and smooth the transition from high school to college. "One sophomore mentor is assigned to each of the 22 to 25 sections of our first-year class (approximately 20 to 22 students in each section), and works closely with the students and faculty...," Sanfilippo wrote in College Planning and Management Magazine. "Peer mentors lead freshmen through academic and community-building activities, help develop time-management and study skills, and help first-year and transfer students adjust both academically and socially to college life. ...Students tell us that the peer mentors helped ease their anxieties about registering for classes and provided invaluable support during their first weeks on campus." Read more

Taking a short break to help
the environment

Fall Break last week (Oct. 27-28) gave students and faculty a couple days off as the semester moves into the final stretch. While some students studied, relaxed or headed to the Waterfront, 16 students spent their Fall Break restoring staghorn coral with the Coral Restoration Foundation in Key Largo. They dove for hours to clean, trim and replant corals stressed by human and environmental factors. The Fall Break activities were sponsored by the Eckerd College Office of Service-Learning and Eckerd Environmental Divers.

Mayor Kriseman
gives State of the City to ASPEC
A capacity crowd of 130 people turned out at Lewis House last week to hear St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman address the state of the city. He discussed the importance of Eckerd College to the community and some of the pressing issues he faces, from building a new downtown Pier to devising a new development plan for the downtown waterfront. He also addressed Eckerd's concerns about a proposed 15-million-gallon reclaimed water tank 20 feet from the College. The mayor assured the audience, including residents of nearby neighborhoods, that he would work to lessen the impact of odors, noise and traffic from the project. The City Council delayed a vote on the project Thursday (Nov. 6) after Eckerd President Don Eastman asked for more time to study it. | The Tampa Tribune | Tampa Bay Times |

Eckerd, Pittsburgh Seminary offer ministry degree

Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Eckerd College are partnering to offer the Doctor of Ministry Parish Focus degree.

It is the second time the two institutions have offered the program, intended for mid-career Presbyterian pastors seeking to enhance their education. The program offers classes at Eckerd for two weeks in January and two weeks in June over a three-year period.

It is open to about a dozen students, beginning in January 2015. Applications are now being accepted.

"Eckerd has had a long history with the Presbyterian Church and we're thrilled to partner with them again," said the Rev. Dr. Susan Kendall, director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Pittsburgh. "Eckerd provides library and research support, classroom space and easy access to the airport and amenities unique to the area."

The Rev. Doug McMahon, Eckerd's chaplain and director of the Center for Spiritual Life, said the program allows busy pastors in the Southeast to earn a doctorate without having to travel to Pittsburgh. "We are pleased with the success of this program and delighted that this partnership will continue," McMahon said. "It is an excellent example of the deep, historical ties between Eckerd and the Presbyterian Church." Read more.

Former president
of the Maldives
speaks at Eckerd
Eckerd College and the Blue Ocean Film Festival teamed up to bring Mohamed Nasheed, former president of the Maldives, to campus on Wednesday night (Nov. 5). Nasheed, the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary The Island President, discussed the challenges of climate change to his island nation (the lowest-lying country in the world) and innovative solutions used there and around the world. Before his talk at Miller Auditorium Nasheed met with students and faculty to answer questions about his climate-change activism. The Blue Ocean Film Festival also hosted a climate change solutions panel discussion Friday morning (Nov. 7) featuring Eckerd College Marine Science Professor David Hastings, one of five scientists who met with Gov. Rick Scott this summer to discuss the threat of global warming to Florida.  Read more |  Photo by Spencer Yaffe '17
Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards hold election-eve rally

She was invited by Eckerd VOX, the student chapter of Planned Parenthood. Richards spoke of the importance of the Florida elections, particularly the governor's race. She said the future of women's reproductive rights was at stake. It was part of a multi-state tour she made to promote candidates who the group believes support women's rights.
