Enrique's Journey kicks off lecture series
Pulitzer-winning journalist Sonia Nazario, author of the freshman reading selection Enrique's Journey, drew a capacity crowd to Fox Hall Thursday night for a riveting presentation on the plight of Central American child refugees. Nazario, whose book describes the arduous quest from Honduras that Enrique made as a teen to reunite with his mother in North Carolina, was joined for the first time in public by Enrique's mother, Lourdes Flores. They described the dangerous conditions children face in Honduras from murderous drug gangs and the risks they face seeking refuge in the United States. The talk kicked off a year-long focus on immigration issues at Eckerd, "Between Worlds: Immigration, Identity and Globalization." Read more.

Dog owner thanks Eckerd students
A boater who lost his beloved beagle Soco in Tampa Bay came to the campus Wednesday to thank the students who helped reunite them and to share his story with local media in the hope of identifying the Good Samaritan who found her. Felts, who brought pizza to the students to show his appreciation, was boating with friends Aug. 24 when Soco fell overboard. He and his friends spent hours searching, unaware that an unnamed boater had rescued her and took her to students at the Waterfront, who kept Soco overnight until they tracked down Felts. "I'm just so appreciative,'' Felts said.

Eckerd, FSU Law School form 3 + 3 Program
|
Eckerd College and the Florida State University College of Law have created a new program that will allow Eckerd students to obtain a bachelor's degree and a law degree in six years instead of seven.
Applications are now being accepted for the 3+3 Program, the third of its kind for the FSU College of Law.
Undergraduates who gain admission to the program after successfully completing their junior year at Eckerd College will follow the usual course of study for full-time, first-year law students. Those who successfully complete their first year at FSU will obtain a BA or BS from Eckerd. Students who fail to complete their first year at law school or withdraw may return to Eckerd to complete their undergraduate degree without applying for readmission.
"Eckerd College is excited to offer our students this opportunity,'' said Dean of Faculty Suzan Harrison. "This saves them a year of tuition and moves them forward in their professional ambitions more quickly."

A late-night
final exam tradition
More than 475 first-year and transfer students enjoyed Late Night Breakfast Aug. 27, an annual tradition marking the end of Autumn Term. Faculty and staff - many of them Eckerd alumni, including Associate Director of Campus Housing Victoria Reeves '10 (above) - flipped pancakes, made omelets, baked waffles and prepared side dishes from 10 p.m to midnight. The breakfasts are held each term the night before final exams as a way to strengthen the bond among students, faculty and staff. "Everybody loves doing it,'' said Dean of Students James Annarelli.

Community luncheon stresses the
diversity of Eckerd
Students, faculty and staff gathered under the GO Pavilion last week for the first community luncheon of the year. Dubbed "The World At Eckerd," the event underscored the diversity of the Eckerd community. They feasted on a buffet of fried chicken, barbecue pork, barbecue tofu and the fixings. Tables were organized by the many states and countries of our students. Our students hail from 45 states and the District of Columbia and 35 countries. Less than 20 percent are from Florida and the average student traveled 1,000 miles.

Students check out ways to make the world a better place Hundreds of students turned out last week for the Service-Learning and Internship Fair at Fox Hall. It was a chance for students to learn about local non-profit organizations, community service, mentoring or internship opportunities. Myriad groups were on hand, representing education, arts, culture, environmental protection, sustainability, gardening for the greater good, working with animals, poverty, human rights, special needs, medicine, wellness, voter education and the Peace Corps. Also on hand: A Northern Crested Cara Cara from Boyd Hill Nature Preserve.

'Something bigger than ourselves'
President Donald R. Eastman III rolled up his sleeves Monday to address attendees at the first General Staff Meeting of the academic year. "We know this is something bigger than ourselves," he said of the work everyone does at Eckerd. "What each of us is doing is building a community.'' He answered questions submitted by staff and urged them to support the Greenlight Pinellas sales tax referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot to fund public transportation improvements and make a better community. The audience also heard a presentation about the referendum by Chris Steinocher, president and CEO of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce.

Overheard
"While the financial benefits of a college degree are demonstrably enormous, college is undeniably expensive - so there is no reason not to be as smart as possible about minimizing unnecessary expenses."
"In a complex, dangerous and volatile world, caution and rule of law are America's best plan."
-Professor of Political Science Anthony Brunello, quoted by Politix about President Obama's approach to dealing with ISIS.
"My concern is that he will use this to give the impression that he's doing something when in fact all he did was meet briefly with us. If this is just a facade and we're playing into his campaign strategy, I don't want to be a part of that."
-Professor of Marine Science David Hastings, quoted by the Tampa Bay Times about his meeting with Gov. Rick Scott and other climate change scientists.
