2013-2014 Presidential Events Series,
The Human Experience: An Odyssey

Book detail from Katherine Boo's Behind the Beautiful Forevers

The 2013-2014 Presidential Events Series, The Human Experience: An Odyssey, emphasizes the philosophy that Eckerd's faculty imparts to first-year students, "Think critically about the world around you and your place in this world." Through speaker presentations and campus initiatives, the series will reflect ideas and concepts that inspire minds to compel an openness to new ways of looking at the world and ignite an intellectual journey that transitions to a lifelong quest and adventure.

The following guest speakers have already visited campus this semester: progressive Episcopalian bishop John Shelby Spong; activist filmmaker Byron Hurt; USF St. Petersburg historian Raymond Arsenault, Ph.D., University of Tampa sociologist Ryan Cragun, Ph.D.; Eckerd faculty and staff William "Bill" Felice, Ph.D., Patrick Henry, Ph.D., and Ronald Porter '05, Ph.D. YWCA of Tampa Bay CEO Lenice Emanuel;

Upcoming speakers include: marine mammal expert Stan Kuczaj, Ph.D. (Oct. 17); Pulitzer Prize winner Katherine Boo (Oct. 23); spoken word artist Natasha "T" Miller (Oct. 24); local historian Will Michaels, Ph.D. (Oct. 30); USF Health Byrd Alzheimer's Institute's CEO and Director Dave Morgan, Ph.D. (Nov. 5); and Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar and paleoanthropologist Timothy Bromage, Ph.D. from NYU College of Dentistry (Nov. 14). All programs are free and open to the public.

Bill Covert Leaves a Legacy
Photo credit: Chris Zuppa of the Tampa Bay Times
After 42 years at Eckerd, Bill Covert has retired as Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Waterfront. The following is excerpted from an announcement shared by Dean of Students Jim Annarelli, Ph.D., with the campus community:

"Bill began his career at Eckerd in 1971 as the part-time Coordinator of Activities and Sailmaster at the Waterfront. He was, in those early years, instrumental in developing the Florida Presbyterian Search, Rescue, and Safety Team, later to become EC-SAR. In 1973, Bill was appointed to the full-time position of Director of Waterfront Activities and, a few years later, was given responsibility for Campus Recreation, Intramurals, and the Game Room. Under his leadership, what were initially recreational activities only - sailing, water skiing, and wind surfing - became, in the 1980s, varsity sports. The College's beautiful Waterfront facilities, well-established Waterfront recreation, EC-SAR, and Sailing programs, and recognition by the regional boating community and U.S. Coast Guard stand as a tribute to the indelible mark that Bill has made on the Eckerd community."

Give Them a Warm Welcome
