Dr. Suzan Harrison '78 Appointed Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Eckerd College

Eckerd President Dr. Donald R. Eastman III has announced the appointment of Professor Suzan Harrison, a 1978 alumna of the College, as the new Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Eckerd College. "Suzan is an award-winning teacher, a literary scholar of considerable accomplishment, a visionary administrator capable of consensus-building, and a diligent and thoughtful colleague who is known for strong advocacy of academic programs and values," said Dr. Eastman. "I have full confidence in her ability to apply her intellectual and personal gifts to advance Eckerd College in her new role."

Dean Harrison is the first Eckerd College graduate and second woman to be appointed Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs in the College's history.

Eckerd's LSP Grads Shine (Part II)

Leadership St. Petersburg (LSP), one of the oldest leadership programs in the nation, is a six-month experience designed to promote and enhance community leadership through an in-depth introduction to social, economic, business and political issues in the St. Petersburg area.

Since its inception, more than a dozen employees have graduated from LSP, including current faculty and staff  who continue their affiliation as leaders within the program. Six were featured in the last issue, another six are featured below. These individuals also serve as some of the "faces of Eckerd" in our local community.

James J. Annarelli, Ph.D.
(LSP Class of 1995), VP for Student Life and Dean of Students, is completing a term as Chair of the School Board of St. Petersburg Catholic High School. During his two terms as a St. Petersburg Free Clinic board member, Dean Annarelli and Eckerd College were consecutive winners of the Free Clinic's "Battle of the Minds" competition in 2004 and 2005.

Peter Hammerschmidt, Ph.D. (LSP Class of 1986), Professor of Economics and Senior Trainer and Research Associate for LDI, has been active in creating and presenting LSP's opening and mid-year retreats on leadership. He is the 1984 recipient of Eckerd's Robert A. Staub Distinguished Professor of the Year Award.

Professor of Sociology Patrick Henry, Ph.D. (LSP Class of 1988), a longtime faculty sponsor of the Eckerd College Homeless Outreach club, teaches a Sociology of Art class that influenced the January exhibit, "Am I an Artist Now? A reflection on the meaning of art and being an artist." The show featured artists and artisans from the community and Creative Clay, a local non-profit whose mission is to provide educational, expressive and vocational opportunities in the arts for people with obstacles to arts access.

In November 2012, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with approval from the US State Department, appointed Lisa A. Mets, Ph.D. (LSP Class of 2003), VP and Secretary of the College, to a five-year term as Honorary Consul of Estonia, the first in Florida. While she may support anyone requesting aid, Dr. Mets officially represents the north Florida region: all counties north of and including Sarasota, Desoto, Highlands, Okeechobee, and Indian River. She is Estonia's 13th honorary consul in the United States. This past February, she was received as a new member of the Tampa Bay Consular Corps. Appointed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, honorary consuls are a traditional part of Estonia's foreign representation abroad. They exercise consular functions by representing the interests and rights of Estonian citizens in their host countries and by promoting bilateral cultural and economic relations. Honorary Consuls, unpaid, bear all the expenses of their consular posts.

Joan Karins (LSP Class of 1975), Program Manager for Eckerd's Special Programs division, is a member of Chorus Angelorum, an a capella chamber ensemble, is an elder and member of the choir in her church, and volunteers on the board of her condominium. She is an active volunteer at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, where she is chairing a committee to plan a new exhibit about the world's first regularly scheduled airline flight that took place between St. Petersburg and Tampa. She is also serving as fundraising chair of Flight 2014, Inc., which is overseeing the centennial celebration of Tony Jannus's historic flight.

As a volunteer for CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse), Associate Dean of Students Lena Wilfalk (LSP Class of 1984) was a recipient of CASA's 2011 Pillar of Peace Award. She is active with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Youth Development Foundation, which works with middle to high school students. Lena is a former chairwoman of the St. Petersburg Community Alliance, created to establish improved communications between members of the white and black communities.

Where Are They Now?

Jeffrey Ackley '08

Christiana Gondreau '93

Melanie Neale '02

A three-year, $125,000 EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Fellowship will enable Eckerd alumnus Jeffrey Ackley '08

to continue his doctoral research - studying the effects of the urban heat island on lizards - at Arizona State University. The EPA-STAR award comes on the heels of a $100,000 NSF Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship fellowship he received in 2009. Jeff majored in biology and double minored in East Asian Studies and Japanese, was a member of Sigma Xi and the Japanese National Honor Society, was named a Ford Apprentice Scholar, and inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Christiana Gondreau '93, her husband Dr. Paul Gondreau and their five children attended Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square in Rome. After mass, their 8-year-old son Dominic Gondreau, who has cerebral palsy, was embraced by Pope Francis. The photograph and video of their encounter received worldwide attention. Click here for the Gondreaus' accounts of their son's moving encounter, which Christiana described as "exceptionally moving." Christiana graduated from Eckerd with a B.A. degree in international business.

Creative Writing alumna Melanie Neale '02 has published her first book - Boat Girl: A Memoir of Youth, Love & Fiberglass (Beating Windward Press, 2012). In January, a middle grades (ages 9-15) version was released as Boat Kid: How I Survived Swimming with Sharks, Being Homeschooled, and Growing Up on a Sailboat. Melanie grew up living aboard a 47' sailboat with her parents and sister. She traveled the U.S. East Coast and the Bahamas from the mid-80's to the end of the 90's, and was home-schooled until she came to Eckerd. She went on to earn an MFA in creative writing from Florida International University and currently works as the Director of Career Services for the Art Institute of Jacksonville.
