The Business Challenge
What is it?
The Business Challenge is a friendly competition to get employees to register for and participate in Bike to Work Day. Because companies come in all sizes, the Effort Index levels the playing field.
Think about it: It is much easier for a company of 10 workers to enlist everyone to participate, and monumentally more difficult to get everyone in a company of 300 to register and participate. That's why we created the Effort Index: to establish a measure where one organization's hard work can be compared and measured against any other organization, regardless of size.

How are top companies recognized?
Bike to Work Day recognizes companies who place in the top of their county's class by providing a commemorative certificate. You can read how Bike to Work Day defines "class" here. We also recognize companies that place in the top 20.
Actually, it is our great sponsors who make prizes possible for the top 20. This year, companies will compete for trophies, food (enough for hosting a congratulatory party), bicycles, bicycle accoutrements and more. More importantly, companies compete for the honor of placing in the top 20, and demonstrating their dedication to bicycling, the environment, the betterment of their community and the health and well-being of their employees. And as far as the top place goes, which companies will take on the Davis Partnership for the No. 1 position? Will the Rocky Mountain Institute or Rally Software make a comeback from Boulder to reclaim their 2014 and 2013 championships? Or, will there be a new organization to claim the top spot? How does a company play to win? If you haven't completed the company sign-up, that's the first step. Answer 11 simple questions about your company, decide whether to set up departments, and whether to purchase T-shirts. It's that simple! How to get into the top 20? Well, that's different! It takes passion and dedication, and hey, let's be honest, it takes some delicate arm twisting to get a few of our colleagues on a bike! Check out the Bike to Work Day Company Coordinator Toolkit for ideas on how to twist arms without causing pain. Thank you and let us know how we can help you make your Bike to Work the Day the best it can be.
