 We Dig Fall...

Literally, not only a retail nursery and landscaper, McAuliffe's is also the grower of much of the plant material we sell. This stunning nursery is wrapped with close to 50 acres of growing fields and fall is the beginning of the digging season. We are able to dig trees once the weather cools off and the moisture level is up. Each season begins and ends with conifers, while deciduous trees are dug after leaf fall. The timing to dig deciduous trees is a lot more delicate and it is critical to dig while the tree is dormant. The digging is done by a special crew that has worked with Jamie since the nursery was founded. After the trees are dug they are wrapped in burlap, twined, and laid down for the farm crew to pick-up. The next step of the process is for the trees to be loaded onto a tractor, potted in a black growers pot while keeping the burlap ball in tact, and displayed in the nursery or back stocked for future sales. A few of the more common shrubs that we grow are: Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald Green'and Buxus sempervirens (dwarf boxwood), which are dug and placed in sawdust beds. These are two common hedge plants and they are often sold in large groupings. Each tree is graded, (its size determined by either height or trunk caliper), and priced with an information tag. These are then added to our inventory system which allows us to work with homeowners, builders, and other landscapers who may be looking for specific sizes and quantities of trees. The season can last six to seven months depending on the weather.

A Sincere 'Thank you!' to everyone who helped celebrate Autumn Tree Fest with us this Fall! We love this time of year when the valley harvest is abundant, the digging season has begun, and the crisp feeling of Fall hangs heavy in the air. Each year we offer fantastic savings on select plant material and enjoy Brats, Pumpkin Pie, and warm Cider. We are excited to share our growing fields with you on a Tractor Hay Ride, paint a few pumpkins, and enjoy the company of the best customers any one could hope for...
Thank you for allowing us to continue doing what we all value and enjoy!

Fall Clean-up

 * Move tender plants in before the hard freeze.

* Finish planting Spring blooming bulbs and garlic.

* Rake leaves. Remember leaf mulch is a great insulator for tender shrubs and perennials.

* Put out slug bait. Sluggo is the pet friendly choice we carry at McAuliffes.

* As the leaves drop it is a great time to see the shape of deciduous trees and shrubs and a perfect time to prune.

* Fertilize the lawn with Dr Earth Super Natural Lawn Fertilizer.

*Mulch planting beds for weed control.

* Turn under the vegetable garden and prep for next season. Add grass clippings or mulch to control weeds. Plant a cover crop to help fix nitrogen.

 Save Something for the Birds

This is the time of year we are busy with fall clean-up; cutting back perennials, pruning trees and shrubs, and raking leaves. While you are busy with all your clean-up be sure to think of our feathered friends and leave a little something behind. Seed heads on grasses and other perennials are sure to be a feast on a cold winter's day. Berries and cones are always popular winter feed for the birds. Grass foliage, hollow twigs, and old leaves make great places for insects and birds to make nests for the following spring. So this fall "leaf" a little mess for the wildlife.

Think Twig Dogwood
One of the most reliable shrubs in the Pacific Northwest is Twig Dogwood. This large family of plants range in size from dwarf of about a foot and a half tall to varieties reaching eight to ten feet. After the foliage drops (both straight green leaf or several types of variegated leaves) you are left with brilliant stems of red, orange, yellow and even coral. These sturdy stems make a great compliment plant to all sorts of conifers and broadleaf evergreens or work perfectly as a stand alone shrub. In addition to their undeniable value in the winter garden, they are also great to mix with fresh greens in vases, add to a paperwhite arrangement or as accents in your holiday wreath. Be sure to ask our knowledgeable staff what varieties we have available this year.
Plant Paperwhites Now

This Holiday Charmer takes about six weeks to bloom, with blooms lasting up to a month, depending on the temperature of your home. For a great holiday look plant your bulbs in a deep clear vase with marbles, rocks or fresh cranberries. The tall vase will help hold these floppy treasures up and look great around your home. If your bulbs seem to be getting ahead of your holiday entertaining you can slow them down by moving them to a cool protected spot outside (as long as the weather is above freezing).
