Student Sings Anthem at FirstEnergy Stadium
  Kayleigh Smith
On April 23, junior Kayleigh Smith sang "The Star Spangled Banner" at FirstEnergy Stadium. As a church music major and frequent national anthem performer for Patriots home games, Smith was more than prepared to open for the Reading Fightin' Phils (the minor league Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies).

The chance for Smith to sing in front of such a wide audience presented itself through VFCC's annual sponsorship with the Fightin' Phils. Dr. DeSanto, chair of the Music Department, coordinated her participation. Having Smith sing was a great way to showcase a talented student and promote the VFCC music program. "This opportunity meant a lot to me," said Smith. "I have been on big stages before, but I have never been in the middle of a baseball field. I definitely lived a childhood dream."

Leadership Tools by Dr. Don Meyer

Aughtmon, Susanna Foth. "I Blame Eve." Revell: Grand Rapids, 2012.

In life we are told over and over again that what we do matters. The decisions we make today will affect our future tomorrow, next week, two months from now and possibly in ten years. We don't really think about it but that good deed that you went out of your way to do or the conversation you had with the person behind you in line could change your life or theirs forever.

Andy Andrews, who has been esteemed as one of America's most influential people, compiled "The Butterfly Effect," a book of short stories about the lives and simple decisions of regular people who took the initiative to do something instead of nothing. And because of that decision, a domino effect has taken place that has changed history forever. We often neglect the fact that our decisions affect those around us as well as ourselves. Andrews draws our attention to people like Joshua Chamberlain who was a middle-aged schoolteacher from Maine whose role as Colonel in the Union Army created the opportunity for him to change not only his regiment's life but also the history of the United States forever. Without his boldness to act in a moment that seemed hopeless, his life, the war and the country could have ended in a very different way. Using beautiful images and simple stories, he capitalizes on the fact that everything we do in life matters. What decisions will you make today that will influence your tomorrows?
