Leadership Tools by Dr. Don Meyer
|
Ruggero, Ed. "Duty First: West Point and The Making of American Leaders." Harper Collins: New York, 2001.
Many books have been written about West Point but one that recently challenged me was Ed Ruggero's "Duty First: West Point and The Making of American Leaders." Ruggero takes the reader inside the world of the young men and women of West Point.
Ruggero observes, "The basic ingredient is good people. West Point takes great pains to admit young men and women who have demonstrated a readiness to learn, a willingness to take on responsibility."
The developmental experience includes five key elements: challenge, support, assessment, reflection, and freedom to fail. As I read this book I was profoundly challenged regarding the rigorous process these cadets went through to become effective soldiers/leaders. How prone we are to lower our expectations and simplify the processes through which we take our current generation of leaders-in-training.
If that challenge exists for those who are preparing for service to their country, how much more should we accept the challenge for preparation for service in the Kingdom of God? Whether in the marketplace or in the church, we are desperately in need of capable, effective leaders.
A simple sign in a West Point hallway says it all, "The more you sweat in peace, the less you will bleed in war." Anyone who cares about leadership development would do well to visit or read about the United States Military Academy at West Point as well as read "Duty First: West Point and The Making of American Leaders."
